Washburn & Doughty 80-ft Z-Drive Tug

Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. of East Boothbay, Maine is pleased to unveil its new 80-ft by 33.8-ft Z-Drive Tug design. The vessel is designed for ship handling and harbor work. It admeasures less than 150 gross tons allowing it to operate without a load line assignment. The tug is designed to exceed ABS standards and customers can choose to specify ABS class. W&D Delivers Z-Drive FiFi Tug

Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. of East Boothbay, Maine delivered Bulldog, a 98 x 37 ft., 6,700 hp, Z Drive firefighting tug, to Crescent Towing of New Orleans, La. Bulldog provides ship-assist and escort services for LNG tankers at the Elba Island LNG re-gasification terminal in Savannah, Ga. Bulldog is a new Washburn & Doughty in-house design and the first tug built at the yard for Crescent Towing. Washburn & Doughty's Chief Naval Architect and Vice President, Bruce Washburn, drew on the company's experience designing and building Z-Drive Tugs for ship docking and LNG operations while designing the 98-ft. Washburn & Doughty Delivers Bulldog to Crescent Towing

Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. delivered the Bulldog, a 98 x 37 ft., 6700 hp, Z Drive Firefighting Tug, to Crescent Towing of New Orleans, Louisiana. Bulldog provides ship-assist and escort services for LNG tankers at the Elba Island LNG re-gasification terminal in Savannah, Georgia. Bulldog is a new Washburn & Doughty in-house design and the first tug built at the yard for Crescent Towing. Washburn & Doughty, Moran Sign Tug Contract

Washburn & Doughty Associates Inc. have signed a contract with Moran Towing Corp. to build one 92-ft. Z Drive Tug (Hull 66) with options for additional tugs. Hull 66 was designed by Washburn & Doughty's vice-president Bruce Washburn for ship handling and coastwise towing and will be built to ABS class Maltese Cross A1, AMS with towing service notation. Two EMD 16-645-E2 main engines rated at 2,100 hp at 900 rpm will power the vessel. The engines will drive Ulstein Z Drives equipped with stainless steel propellers and kort nozzles. Two Detroit model 6-71RC "N" generator engines rated at 70kW at 1,200 rpm, 208V 3 phase will be installed onboard. Hull 66 will feature rubber "D" fender fitted on the vessel's sides at the main deck extending between the bow and stern fenders.

Washburn & Doughty Launches Fort Bragg

Fort Bragg, built by Washburn & Doughty for Cape Fear Towing Company of Wilmington, N.C., will be primarily used for docking shops and coastal towing. Fort Bragg was designed by Washburn & Doughty's naval architect and vice-president, Bruce Washburn, and built to ABS and USCG standards, but not classed. The vessel is powered by two Caterpillar 3516 electronic main engines rated at 2,200 hp at 1,600 rpm. These engines power two Ulstein model 1650H Z-drives, with a combined capacity to produce 54 tons of bollard pull. The Z-drives are outfitted with 90 in. Bird Johnson stainless steel propellers, kort nozzles with stainless steel liners and hydraulic steering controls. The vessel features a NETEC 30 in. electric capstan on the aft deck and a NETEC hydraulic escort winch on the fore deck.

Tracy Moran will join sisterships Marci Moran (1999 MarineNews Great Boat), Karen Moran and Susan Moran in Norfolk, Va. where they are contracted by the Military Sealift Command for submarine and ship assist work. Measuring 92 x 32 x 13.8 ft. and built to ABS Maltese Cross A1, AMS, Towing Service standards, Tracy Moran is powered by two 2,000 hp EMD 16-645-EZ main engines driving Ulstein Z Drives. Tracy Moran was designed by Washburn & Doughty's vice-president and naval architect, Bruce Washburn. The Moran tugs are built to Washburn's second Z-Drive Tug design.

Washburn & Doughty Shipyard of East Boothbay, Maine is preparing to launch Tracy Moran, the fourth in a series of six Z-Drive Tugs under construction for the Moran Towing Corporation of Greenwich, Conn. Tracy Moran will join its sisterships in Norfolk, Va. where they are contracted by the Military Sealift Command for submarine and ship assist work. Measuring 92 x 32 x 13.8 ft. (28 x 9.7 x 4.2 m) and built to ABS Maltese Cross A1, AMS, Towing Service standards, Tracy Moran is powered by two 2,000 hp EMD 16-645-EZ main engines driving Ulstein Z Drives. Service speed for Tracy Moran is planned for 13 knots and the vessel has a 32,000 gallon fuel oil capacity.
