Capt. Harry Delivered to Wilmington Tug

On December 19, Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc., of East Boothbay, Maine delivered Capt. Harry, a 4200 hp Z Drive tug to Wilmington Tug of Wilmington, Del. Designed by Robert Allan Ltd., this ASD 25/55 Class Tug measure 80 x 32 ft. It will be used primarily for ship docking; however, and extended keel will allow for operation as an escort tug in the indirect mode. Wilmington Tug operates five tugs, and in 1977 became the first operator in North America to operate a Z Drive Tug. Wilmington Tug’s newest vessel is the ninth Z Drive Tug built by Washburn & Doughty since the Fort Bragg was constructed for Cape Fear Towing in 1998. Two Detroit Diesel model 12V4000 main engines rated at 2100 hp at 1800 RPM power the vessel.

W&D Signs Contract with Wilmington Tug

Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. of East Boothbay, Maine signed a contract to build a 4,200 hp Z-Drive Tug for Wilmington Tug of Wilmington, Delaware. Washburn & Doughty Delivers Kittiwake

On October 3, 2002, Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. Vessel, to Hempstead Navigation Service LLC of Exeter, Rhode Island. (5/16" shell) and an aluminum deckhouse. adjusting and repair when not otherwise at sea. advanced navigation, seamanship and shiphandling aboard Kittiwake. smaller research projects. Davis' years of experience at sea. URI and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. vessel deliveries worldwide to her credit. similar vessels in steel, aluminum and fiberglass. practices. 1800 rpm. 22 shaft, and a 48" 5 blade NiBrAl propeller through an Aquadrive unit. requirements. satisfied. isolation and corrected voltage when plugged into shore power. thruster hydraulically powered from the 35 KW generator. installed at the pilothouse and bridge wing stations.

Hempstead Navigation Takes Kittiwake

Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. (W&D) delivered Kittiwake, a 72- x 20- x 10.5-ft. Offshore Motor Vessel, to Hempstead Navigation Service LLC of Exeter, Rhode Island. The vessel, which is designed for long distance travel, has a .375-in. steel hull and an aluminum deckhouse. Hempstead Navigation Service's core business has been contracting the delivery of military and commercial vessels worldwide, and compass adjusting and repair when not otherwise at sea. With the delivery of Kittiwake, company owners Robert Hempstead and Letitia Davis, a husband and wife team, plan to expand their business to include training in advanced navigation, seamanship and shiphandling aboard Kittiwake. Additionally, they plan to operate her as a research platform for smaller research projects.

Washburn & Doughty Delivers Karen Moran

Washburn & Doughty delivered Karen Moran, second in a series of six identical Z Drive tugs being constructed for the Moran Towing Corporation of Greenwich, Conn. Karen Moran will join sistership Marci Moran in Norfolk, Va., where the two vessels are contracted by the Military Sealift Command for submarine and ship assist work. Karen Moran measures 92 x 32 x 13.8 ft. and is built to ABS Maltese Cross A1, AMS with notation: Towing Service standards. Service speed for Karen Moran is 13 knots and it has a 32,000 gallon fuel oil capacity. The vessel is powered by two EMD 16-645-E2 main engines rated at 4,000 hp, 900 rpm and driving Ulstein Z Drives. Karen Moran uses Hule D fendering for the side and sub fendering and Schuyler Soft Loop on both the bow and stern.

Washburn & Doughty Win Contract

Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. of East Boothbay, Maine signed a contract to design and build a 72 x 20 x 10.5 ft/ Offshore Motor Vessel (Hull 76) for Hempstead Navigation Service LLC. The vessel, which is designed for long distance travel, will have a steel hull (5/16" shell) and an aluminum deckhouse. Hull 76 will feature a Caterpillar 3406E main engine rated at 450 hp at 1,800 rpm. The vessel is designed to travel at 10 knots and will use a Twin Disc 5114 close-coupled reverse gear with a 4.1 to 1 reduction ratio, a 4-in. Aquamet 22 shaft, and a 48-in. five-blade NiBrAl propeller. Two generators, a Northern Light model 984 K (32 kW) and a Northern Light model M844K (16 kW), will fulfill the vessel's electric power requirements.

Measuring 92 x 32 x 13.8 ft. and built to ABS Maltese Cross A1, AMS, Towing Service standards, Tracy Moran is powered by two 2,000 hp EMD 16-645-EZ main engines driving Ulstein Z Drives. Tracy Moran was designed by Washburn & Doughty's vice-president and naval architect, Bruce Washburn. The Moran tugs are built to Washburn's second Z-Drive Tug design.

Washburn & Doughty Shipyard of East Boothbay, Maine is preparing to launch Tracy Moran, the fourth in a series of six Z-Drive Tugs under construction for the Moran Towing Corporation of Greenwich, Conn. Tracy Moran will join its sisterships in Norfolk, Va. where they are contracted by the Military Sealift Command for submarine and ship assist work. Measuring 92 x 32 x 13.8 ft. (28 x 9.7 x 4.2 m) and built to ABS Maltese Cross A1, AMS, Towing Service standards, Tracy Moran is powered by two 2,000 hp EMD 16-645-EZ main engines driving Ulstein Z Drives. Service speed for Tracy Moran is planned for 13 knots and the vessel has a 32,000 gallon fuel oil capacity. Washburn & Doughty's vice-president and naval architect, Bruce Washburn, designed Tracy Moran.
