Oakland Port Gets Funding for Tech Program

The Alameda County Transportation Commission has received $12.45 million from the California Transportation Commission for the implementation of the Freight Intelligent Transportation System (FITS) program at the Port of Oakland.FITS includes 15 freight technology demonstration projects designed to address traffic management, security systems and roadway improvements at the Oakland seaport. The funding comes from California Senate Bill 1 funds.The Port said FITS will reduce congestion and improve traffic flow for truckers who haul cargo containers in and out of Oakland. It will also update security systems and provide a common communication platform for first responders…

Gadkari Calls for Implementing IT in Port Operations

The Minister of Shipping and Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari has said that the efficiency of Indian ports has improved greatly over the last two years and the performance of government ports in the country has been better than private ports this year. He said, the Ministry has taken various steps to improve the efficiency of ports. Old rules have been weeded out, port mechanization and modernization is being done on war footing and projects for improving connectivity of ports are being implemented in right earnest. He further stressed upon the importance of e governance for ensuring good governance The Minister released a report titled “Next Generation Port Infrastructure - Technology Transformation for Integrated Port Operations” in New Delhi.

Waterways – Intelligent Transportation System

The Port of Pittsburgh Commission has applied for a $35.21m USDOT TIGER Grant to deploy two communications technologies at 200 "Hot-zones" throughout the inland waterway system to create a Waterways – Intelligent Transportation System. The technologies include the Automated Identification System (AIS), which the USCG has deployed at major U.S. seaports and Wireless Broadband (WB), which, with greater bandwidth, can accommodate more business as well as governmental communication uses. The application received the backing of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the American Waterway Operators, but also has applications for maritime equipment manufacturers and river terminals. Announcement of the awards by DOT is expected between mid-December and mid-February.
