US Awards More than $653 Million for Port Projects

Eastern Completes First Ollis Class Vessel for Staten Island Ferry

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. (ESG) announced it has completed the first of three new Staten Island “Ollis Class” ferries for the City of New York Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) Staten Island Ferry Division. The MV SSG Michael H. Ollis, Hull 219, departed ESG’s Port St. Joe, Fla. facility fully certified and passenger ready.Dann Ocean Towing’s Colonel is towing the ferry on a 12-dray trip to New York City. FERC Issues Final EIS to Rio Grande LNG

Houston-based NextDecade announced that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has issued the final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for NextDecade’s Rio Grande liquified natural gas (LNG) project in Brownsville, Texas, as well as for the associated Rio Bravo Pipeline to originate in the Agua Dulce area.The EIS issued by the FERC was prepared in accordance with statutory requirements in the National Environmental Policy Act. Answering the Call for Environmental Answers

The Coast Guard has developed two separate mitigation system prototypes specifically designed for inland and offshore environments and tested them in the Kalamazoo River and Lake Huron.Whenever there is a need for oil, there will always be a risk of oil spills. This is no less true for bituminous sands, commonly known as oil sands or tar sands. Oil sands are mostly found in Alberta, Canada, and comprised of bitumen, sand, clay and water. They are typically viscous, with a texture similar to peanut butter.

Unfortunately, ships can also unintentionally transport stowaways, small organisms which live in ballast water. Most people would not look at small organisms like mitten crabs or zebra mussels and think they are a major threat to the environment – and in their natural habitats they pose no threat.
