Genting Dream Christened in China

Dream Cruises, the first-ever Asian luxury cruise line, claimed its place in history here today when Genting Dream’s official Godmother, Puan Sri Cecilia Lim, the wife of Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Genting Hong Kong christened its maiden luxury cruise ship, spectacular Genting Dream, before an assembly of prominent officials from the Chinese government as well as top executives from trade and industry. Genting Dream's arrival also marked the first time a luxury cruise ship of this scale has home-ported in Guangzhou (Nansha). More than 900 guests were on hand to witness the historic occasion and take part in the gala celebrations, including Mr. Cai Zhaolin, Vice Mayor of Guangzhou, Mr.

This Day In Naval History: June 13

1881 - The bark-rigged wooden steamship Jeannette sinks after she is crushed in an Arctic ice pack during the expedition to reach the North Pole through the Bering Strait. Only 13 of her crew survive out of 33. 1900 - During the Boxer Rebellion, the International Relief Expedition turns back near Anting, China, and moves to Sanstun after the Tientsin-Peking railroad is cut by the Boxers, whose anti-foreign mantra grew to burning homes and killing foreigners as well as Chinese Christians. In total, 56 Marines and Sailors receive the Medal of Honor for their actions during the Rebellion.

This Day In Naval History: May 31

1900 - Sailors and Marines from USS Newark (C 1) and USS Oregon (BB 3) arrive at Peking (now known as Beijing), China, to protect U.S. and foreign diplomatic legations during the Boxer Rebellion. 1918 - USS President Lincoln is torpedoed and sunk by German submarine, (U 90). Twenty-six lives are lost. 1919 - Curtiss flying boat NC 4 lands at Plymouth, England, concluding the first transatlantic flight. 1944 - USS England (DE 635), assisted by six destroyers and destroyer escorts, sinks sixth Japanese submarine in less than two weeks. 1944 - USS Barb (SS 220) and USS Herring (SS 233) attack Japanese shipping in the Sea of Okhotsk about 150 miles west of Matsuwa Island, Kuril Islands, sinking several ships.

Remembering Peter Stanford

Peter Stanford, founding president of the South Street Seaport Museum passed away on Thursday morning, 24th March 2016. We have lost our founder. We have lost a passionate advocate for our work.We have lost a friend. I first met Peter Stanford when I joined the Seaport Museum as Waterfront Director. He was visiting to advocate for an exhibition on the ship Wavertree. He spoke enthusiastically about a particular model in the Museum's collection, asserting that it must be a part of the project. As the visit wrapped up, he eagerly queried me on my background. Peter was a persistent man, endlessly insisting that the apparently impossible could be achieved. And in that - and as long as he and Norma were involved - he was quite right.

Maritime Disputes Headline U.S.-China Talks

The U.S. pressed China to implement structural reforms in its exchange rate and to modify its "aggressive behaviour" in disputed waters during a preliminary round of bilateral talks, senior U.S. officials said. The United States, led by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, will also push China this week to resume cooperation on fighting cyber espionage and return to dialogue on internet issues, a senior U.S. official said. The two-day annual Strategic and Economic Dialogue kicks off officially on Wednesday.

Charles Wilkes, aboard the sloop Vincennes, is the first American to discover the Antarctic coast. 1929 - The 3rd Marine Corps Brigade is disbanded at Tientsin, China, and all units, except the 4th Marines and the Peking legation guard, are withdrawn from the country. 1972 - A Navy F-4 Phantom from USS Constellation (CVA 64) downs a Vietnamese MiG-21. This is the first aerial victory since March 1970.

The Peking is open to visitors of the museum daily from 10am to 6pm.

Northrop Grumman Awarded Ship Contract

Northrop Grumman Corporation was awarded a contract from Maersk Line, Limited for maintenance work on the military prepositioning ship M/V Pvt. Franklin J. Phillips. Northrop Grumman's Newport News sector is the prime contractor for the work, which will include dry-docking, maintenance and repair. The Phillips arrived at the shipyard on Sept. 26 and will remain for approximately five weeks. and rudder maintenance; and underwater hull painting. The contract is valued at $9.49 million. “This is an important opportunity for our fleet-support business,” said Irwin F. Edenzon, vice president of technology development and fleet support at Northrop Grumman Newport News. The M/V Pvt. Franklin J.
