HII on Wednesday announced its Ingalls Shipbuilding division authenticated the keel of the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer Jeremiah Denton (DDG 129). The ship’s name honors former U.S. Sen. SECNAV Names Newest Destroyer in Honor of U.S. Marine

Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer named the next Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer in honor of Marine Corps Vietnam veteran and Navy Cross recipient Lance Cpl. Patrick Gallagher. In 1966, Gallagher, who immigrated from Ballyhaunis, Ireland in 1962, joined the Marine Corps where he served in H-Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division during Operation Hastings in the Republic of Vietnam. "Lance Corporal Gallagher is an American hero. His exemplary service in defense of our nation and his strength and sacrifice leaves an example for all servicemen and women to emulate," said Spencer. Gallagher was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions on July 18, 1966, when he selflessly threw his body on an incoming grenade, shielding his fellow Marines.

US Navy to Commission Rafael Peralta Today

The US Navy will commission its newest guided-missile destroyer, the future USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115), during a 10 a.m. PDT ceremony Saturday, July 29, at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego. During a ceremony to honor women who served in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced an Arleigh-Burke class destroyer, DDG 123, will be named Lenah H. Sutcliffe Higbee. Higbee, the future ship's namesake, was a pioneering United States Navy chief nurse, who served as the Superintendent of the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps during World War I and was the first female recipient of the Navy Cross. “It is a great honor to name this ship in recognition of Lenah H. Sutcliffe Higbee,” Mabus said.

Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. has delivered the Raymond Evans, the 10th Fast Response Cutter (FRC) to the United States Coast Guard (USCG). The announcement was made by Bollinger President, Chris Bollinger: “We are extremely proud to announce the delivery of the Raymond Evans, the latest FRC built by Bollinger, to the 7th Coast Guard District in Key West, Fla. The Raymond Evans, as well as the previous nine FRC deliveries, were proudly delivered on time and on budget. The 154 foot patrol craft Raymond Evans is the tenth vessel in the Coast Guard's Sentinel-class FRC program.

Fireboat Dedicated at Long Beach Port

A new fireboat was officially welcomed into service Wednesday at the Port of Long Beach, representing a significant leap forward in protecting the harbor and the flow of trade through the nation’s second-busiest seaport. In a dockside ceremony attended by 100 invited guests, the fireboat named “Protector” was dedicated in memory of Donald Domenic DiMarzo, a former Long Beach Fire Department captain. DiMarzo served as a fire marshal aboard the USS Intrepid in the Pacific during World War II. He was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service for leading efforts to save the aircraft carrier after an attack that set it ablaze on Nov. 25, 1944.

USS Kauffman Deploys for the Last Time

The guided-missile frigate USS Kauffman (FFG 59), departed Naval Station Norfolk today for the ship's final deployment and will operate in the U.S. 4th Fleet area of responsibility. Kauffman's final deployment also marks the last scheduled deployment by any Oliver Hazard Perry-Class frigate and in September the ship will be the last operationally-active frigate to decommission. At that time, the only remaining frigate in the U.S. Navy will be USS Constitution, Navy's ambassador that was launched in 1797 and remains the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world. During Kauffman's final deployment, the crew will support the United States Southern Command and the Joint Interagency Task Force South's Operation Martillo.
