American Commercial Barge Line (ACBL) named Mark K. Knoy as its president and chief executive officer in August 2011. Prior to joining ACBL, he was vice president of American Electric Power’s (AEP) Fuel, Emissions and Logistics Group and president of AEP River Operations, having joined AEP with its 2001 purchase of MEMCO Barge Line. From 1984 to 1994, he was owner/operator of The Mark Twain Towing Company and Delmar Marine, Inc., Pekin, Illinois. He began his career in 1973 working aboard towboats on the inland waterways as a deck hand and then as a captain.

Marine transportation service company American Commercial Lines (ACL) announced it has acquired commercial inland barge company AEP River Operations from American Electric Power (AEP). AEP River Operations is based in Chesterfield, Mo., with operations in Paducah, Ky.; and Convent, Algiers and Belle Chasse, La., and delivers approximately 45 million tons of products annually. Mark Knoy, president and CEO of Jeffersonville, Ind. based ACL, had previously run AEP River Operations for a decade before joining ACL in 2011.

American Commercial Lines Inc. (ACL), one of the largest and most diversified inland marine transportation and service companies in the United States, announced today the appointment of Paul A. Tobin as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. An industry veteran, Mr. Tobin's most recent role was Senior Vice President Administration for AEP River Operations. He joined AEP in 2001 with the company's purchase of Memco Barge Line, where he served as Vice President Administration and Director Insurance during his four-year tenure.

MEMCO Barge Line, the inland barging subsidiary of Electric Fuels Corp. (EFC), christened a new towboat in New Orleans. M/V Joy Anne Keller, named after the wife of EFC President and CEO Richard D. Keller is the 22nd towboat in MEMCO's fleet. Built by Quality Shipyards, of Houma, La., the 8,000 hp twin-screw towboat measures 180 x 48 x 11.5 ft., and is designed to operate on the Lower Mississippi River between Cairo and New Orleans. Columbus, Ohio-based AEP said its AEP Resources Inc. wholly-owned subsidiary will buy 1,200 hopper barges and 30 towboats from Electric Fuels Corp., a Progress subsidiary, making AEP one of the leading barge operators. "The coupling of the MEMCO barge assets with our existing fleet will add earnings and significant information flow in the sometimes-neglected transportation component of our business," said Paul Addis, executive vice president of AEP's Wholesale activities.

The LST-325 (Landing Ship, Tank), a World War II amphibious vessel designed to land battle-ready tanks, troops and supplies directly onto enemy shores, will once again be plying the waters, but this time, being towed as a floating memorial making a maiden educational voyage on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers this summer. The LST-325 is one of only two World War II LSTs to be preserved in the United States and is crewed solely by veterans. Towing services are being provided by several barge companies including Kirby Corporation (Houston, TX); Luhr Bros.
