Time is Running Out for some Fi-Fi Foams

A new IMO resolution will see the phase-out of foam firefighting systems that use fluorinated foams containing perfluoro-octane sulfonic acid (PFOS) as the foam-producing component. The new rules come into effect under a rolling programme beginning in 2026, but Swedish maritime engineering specialist Scanunit believes that a proactive replacement strategy should be put into effect now.Foam firefighting systems on ships typically make use of a family of synthetic chemical compounds known as perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

COSCO Signs Up for Methanol Retrofits

COSCO Heavy Industry Shanghai Co. Ltd. has signed a contract with MAN Energy Solutions for the methanol retrofit of four main engines from COSCO Line’s Camellia and Virgo -class vessels – 13,800 and 20,000 teu respectively. Currently equipped with single-fuel MAN B&W 11S90ME-C10.5 engines, the vessels will be retrofitted to dual-fuel MAN B&W 11S90ME-LGIM10.5 units capable of operating on fuel-oil or methanol, in the process becoming the first vessels in COSCO’s fleet to sail on methanol.The contract also includes an option for the retrofit of an additional nine vessels from the line’s 20…

Stena Line Vessels to Be Fitted with Yara Shore Power Solutions

Yara Marine to Supply Shore Power Systems for Three Finnlines Vessels

Ro-ro and ro-pax operator Finnlines has inked a deal to install Yara Marine’s shore power solution on board three vessels to reduce fuel consumption, emissions, and noise in port. Algoma Implements Marine Learning Systems Training Solution

Canadian shipping company Algoma Central Corporation has implemented Marine Learning Systems’ training platform to support employee development and Algoma’s Environmental Compliance Plan. The training management solution allows for on-demand reporting and anytime, anywhere training for safer operations.Algoma’s new system allows employees to access online training on board their vessels, even when internet connectivity is intermittent. This allows both shoreside and on-vessel employees to receive the same training experience, regardless of their location. Kongsberg to Equip Triumph Subsea's New Field Development Vessel

Norwegian maritime tech and equipment company Kongsberg Maritime (KM) will deliver a large technology package for Triumph Subsea Services' field development vessel (FDV).Triumph Subsea Services in December 2020 signed a contract with the Croatian shipbuilder Brodosplit for the construction of the vessel, with options to order three more.Kongsberg Maritime said Thursday it had signed a Letter of Intent with Brodosplit Shipyard and DIV Group in Croatia to deliver a large technology package for the vessel.

SMD Quasar WROV Dives 5.7km Deep

Soil Machine Dynamics (SMD) announces that a deep-sea Quasar Work Class Remotely Operated Vehicle (WROV) has successfully completed sea trials.The 6000-meters-rated WROV, complemented with an electric drive dual-purpose winch and launch and recovery system (LARS), reached the seabed at 5,760 meters during the trials.The complete turnkey solution was recently delivered to Shanghai Salvage and has undergone extensive testing at various depths. GTT Revenue Grows Thanks to Strong LNG Market

French liquefied natural gas containment system specialist Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT), on the back of liquefied natural gas (LNG) market growth, reported 12% growth in revenues linked to royalties  for the first half of 2018.Growth in LNG fuel and new partnerships aided the company achieving a revenue of 127.2 million euros ($148.2 million) during the first half of this year compared to 113.7 million euros recorded in the first half of 2017.GTT said that it has received 21 orders  during the first six months of the year.Philippe Berterottière, Chairman and CEO of GTT, said: "The first half of 2018 was characterised by the growth in the LNG market, with a very satisfying number of orders for LNG carriers, which confirms the trends that began last year.

GTT, VARD Complete LNG Tank Contract

GTT concluded a contract with the Norwegian shipyard, VARD, for the supply of the LNG tanks to expedition ship, PONANT Icebreaker. This ship, whose delivery is planned for 2021, will be the first electric hybrid cruise ice-breaker with LNG propulsion. It will be operated by PONANT, a luxury polar expedition cruise line. Designed for LNG fuel specifications, these tanks will be equipped with GTT's Mark III membrane technology. The Group will conduct the construction of the tanks.

YANMAR Cruises Into Alaska with Power to Spare

YANMAR only recently arrived in the Pacific Northwest with its mechanical 6AYAM-ET diesel engine. It looks like they are here to stay. In November of last year, YANMAR America and its guests officially opened the YANMAR EVO//CENTER in Acworth, Ga. Situated on 50-plus acres of land in Cherokee County, the new 50,000 square foot facility features six state-of-the-art product training labs with classroom and hands-on space, three classrooms, multiple meeting rooms, office space, a 250-seat auditorium, and myriad other amenities and features.
