Lifeboats Need to be Reinvented, Industry Group Says

A maritime industry safety group is calling for the total reinvention of lifeboats on board cargo vessels amid frequent injuries among seafarers.“Lifeboats are an essential part of crew safety onboard every vessel, but seafarers are way too often getting injured when launching the lifeboat,” the Container Ship Safety Forum e.V. Survitec Receives DNV GL Certification

Australian Built Ferry Heads for Denmark

A new generation fast ferry has left Tasmania on her delivery voyage to Denmark via the Panama Canal. The Express 3 is a 109 meter long high speed vehicle/passenger ferry from Australian shipbuilder Incat Tasmania for Danish operator Molslinjen, becoming the fourth Hobart-built catamaran in the company’s current fleet. Survitec's Evacuation Systems in Focus at SMM

Survitec Group is promoting its range of Marine Evacuation Systems (MES) at SMM 2014. The company said it can supply systems to suit every type of vessel, from small high speed ferries through to mid-sized passenger ships, large ROPAX and cruise ships. In 1979 the group launched the world's first MES. Since then, Survitec has continued to develop its MES range. It now includes systems manufactured under the RFD, SurvitecZodiac, DSB, RFD Toyo, DBC and Brude brand names. The DSB Cat-Slide MES, Brude KOPAS and SurvitecZodiac Evacuation Slide systems are designed principally for smaller ferries and passenger vessels with low freeboards. Easy to operate, these systems can typically be deployed with minimal input from the ship's crew.

SCI has agreed partnerships with Danish firms Hysafe and Hytek, both part of the Hytek Group. The companies will have sales and installation rights for SCI's Safelaunch lifeboat release and retrieval systems (LRRS), which comply with the latest Solas MSC.1 / Circ 1392 guidelines. SCI Launches Liferaft Equipment Division

Survival Craft Inspectorate (SCI), a global provider of emergency marine evacuation systems, is to launch a new division at the Cruise Shipping Miami 2013 exhibition (March 11-14, 2013). The new division of SCI will supply, install and maintain emergency liferafts for the commercial cruise shipping and energy markets. Vessel Specific Training Via Adaptive Learning Experience

It is difficult and expensive to do vessel-specific training well. This is probably why, unlike certification training, it is under specified, and in many cases poorly implemented - often via job shadowing. But there is a technology which is an excellent tool for vessel-specific training, and every vessel operator should be aware of it. It is called adaptive learning. This article describes adaptive learning and examines one vessel operator’s deployment of it in order to facilitate vessel-specific training across its fleet of 35 vessels.

Jos Lems, who has more than 25 years’ experience in the maritime sector, has joined Survival Craft Inspectorate as Head of Global Sales. He will also lead the opening of the company’s new operation in Rotterdam, Holland. Ocean Safety Wins UK Defense Contract

Independent safety supplier Ocean Safety has been awarded a four year contract with the U.K.’s Ministry of Defense (MOD). This contract will see Ocean Safety continue to supply, service and repair their commercial liferafts and DBC marine evacuation systems.
