ITIC Exposes Real Cost of Crew Internet Access for Ship Manager

International Transport Intermediaries Club (ITIC) has explained how a ship manager was recently asked to pay $436,000 in communication costs as the result of an error which unwittingly allowed the crew of a ship unrestricted access to the internet over a three-month period.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> In the latest issue of its Claims Review, ITIC notes that it was the policy of a particular shipping company to upgrade the communications packages on all its time-chartered and owned vessels from systems which provided email and satellite telephone communications only…

Zodiac, New Law Enforcement RIBs

Zodiac of North America, Inc., is launching their new Zodiac Enforcer line of RIBs tailored to the needs of marine law enforcement agencies. The Enforcer series was first displayed to the public and law enforcement customers at the Miami International Boat Show this month. Marlink Signs Deal with Kyma

OSLO, Norway and ROCKVILLE, Maryland (October 27, 2003) - Marlink today announced that it has signed a five-year agreement with the owners of the MV Mona Lisa, represented by Kyma Ship Management, Inc. of Miami, Florida, to provide complete satellite communications onboard the vessel. The agreement calls for Marlink, a company within Telenor Satellite Services formed to serve as the preferred interface between maritime customers and the satellite communications industry, to provide Sealink high-speed communications service. Operating at speeds up to 2 Megabits per second, the Sealink solution allows guests and crew to enjoy greater access to the Internet, e-mail, fax services, and telephone service.

Marlink Launches Iridium-Based @Sea(mail)

Marlink has developed a group of mobile communications packages derived from the Iridium satellite system - tailored to meet the needs of the maritime and related sectors - including Marlink's own e-mail product, @Sea(mail). With 10 key locations throughout the world, and a customer service network available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Marllink's e-mail service (via Iridium) is fully MAPI compliant and offers mobile Internet e-mail access at up to 10 kb/s, plus fax and telex capabilities, and full duplex transmission.

Telenor Satellite Services, a subsidiary of Telenor of Norway, has purchased the satellite communications activities of Norse Technology AS and additionally has acquired the majority of stock in Norwegian-based Norse Electronics AS. With this purchase, Telenor Satellite Services intends to re-establish Norse Electronics AS as the leading integrator of communications services for the Oil & Offshore industry. The acquisition of Norse Electronics also serves to enhance Telenor Satellite Services’ capabilities to deliver complete communications packages and services for the Oil & Offshore market as well as the maritime transportation industry.
