XL Catlin Promotes Chief Underwriting Officer, Marine

XL Catlin today announced the promotion of Anne Marie Elder to the role of Chief Underwriting Officer Marine for the Americas region. Elder in her new leadership role now reports to Lee Meyrick, XL Catlin’s Chief Underwriting Officer for Global Marine, in London. Elder, who previously held the position of Senior Vice President and Chief Underwriting Officer, Inland Marine in North America,  assumes the role formerly held by Richard DeSimone. DeSimone, who joined XL Catlin in 2011 to help build its North America Marine capabilities, retired from the company on December 31, 2015. Nickel Ore Shipments: Lessons Learned from Losses

One of the most pressing problems for the bulk shipping industry is the safe carriage of nickel ore. The increasing demand for this commodity is fuelled by China’s thirst for nickel ore as it is the principal alloy component for stainless steel. Chinese nickel ore imports have spiraled from nearly 5m metric tons (mt) in 2006 to near 50m mt in 2011. The bulk of these imports come from Indonesia, with the Philippines now running very close behind. But this fast-expanding trade has been marred by the heavy price paid in terms of lives and vessels lost. In August, the 2012-built Trans Summer sank off Hong Kong, but all 21 crew were saved by rescue helicopters. All these vessels were carrying nickel ore from Indonesia to China.

IMUA Names Award-winning Marine Underwriter

Gina Domitrovich, AMIM, Senior Marine Underwriter, AIG Global Marine & Energy, is the first recipient of the new American Marine Claims Award, by Inland Marine Underwriters Association’s (IMUA). The award presentation was made closing ceremonies during IMUA"s 83rd Annual Meeting held in Buckhead, Atlanta, GA. As the winner of the American Marine Claims Award, Ms. Domitrovich will receive a $2,000 cash award and a stipend towards attendance at the International Marine Claims Conference held in Dublin, Ireland. Zurich Appoints Gillen Head of Marine Claims

Zurich, a property and casualty insurance provider globally and in North America, announced that Steve Gillen has joined Zurich in a key new role as Global Head of Marine Claims. Effective immediately, Gillen will work closely with regional marine leadership and regional claims organizations to enhance Zurich’s claims proposition in support of the global marine specialty practice, and enhance claims capabilities in support of Zurich’s marine business. Gillen has more than 25 years of extensive experience in marine claims and risk engineering, most recently serving as senior vice president and president, Chartis Marine Claims Adjusters, Inc. Prior to his time at Chartis, Gillen held numerous senior level positions within the industry.

U.S. Marine Insurers To Review State Of Market

Trends and developments affecting the U.S. ocean marine insurance market will be discussed at the annual meeting of the American Institute of Marine Underwriters (AIMU) on Friday, Nov. 19 in New York City. The meeting will be held in the Ricker Auditorium, 180 Maiden Lane, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Ed Badolato, chairman of the National Cargo Security Council (NCSC), will be the featured speaker. The NCSC is a broad-based organization of government agencies and private industry working together to fight cargo theft. AIMU chairman James A. Zrebiec, chairman of International Marine Underwriters, a member of the CGU Insurance Group, will report on issues in the global marine insurance marketplace. Walter Kramer, AIMU president, will discuss AIMU program initiatives.
