NSWC Carderock Receives 2005 ManTech Achievement Award

February 3, 2006

Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Carderock Division received the 2005 Defense Manufacturing Technology (ManTech) Achievement Award by the U.S. Office of Naval Research for extraordinary accomplishments on DD(X), the Navy’s next-generation multirole surface combatant. The 2005 ManTech Achievement Award specifically recognizes a project that addresses a design challenge using composite-to-steel joint development for DD(X). This exceptional ship features an all-composite deckhouse joined to a steel hull. “Carderock strives to deliver our customers with the right product to meet their needs and provide solutions,” said Carderock Division Commander Capt. Charles Behrle. “We’re very proud of the employees that worked on this team.” The revolutionary adhesive technology designed for the DD(X) significantly improves performance and increased survivability while reducing in-service maintenance expense. The joint is 40 percent lighter in weight and 50 percent less expensive to produce than existing configurations. Preparations are underway for implementation of the technology by several Navy shipbuilders. Established in 1999, the award distinguishes teams dedicated to advancing the nation’s defense with innovative and affordable technology. The award was presented to NSWCCD’s DD(X) project team at the Defense Manufacturing Conference. By NSWC Carderock Division Corporate Communications
