GL Appoints New VP

The new Vice President Division East Asia of Germanischer Lloyd is Dr Volkmar Wasmansdorff. As a process engineer with considerable professional experience in Asia, he will be responsible for the business activities of the Germany based classification society in Korea, China, Japan, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Bangladesh, India, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Australia and New Zealand. Born in Wilhelmshaven, he studied mechanical and process engineering after serving in the German Navy.

Dr Wasmansdorff succeeds Hergen Thielemann, who retires this week after almost 20 years with Germanischer Lloyd. In the presence of more than 150 guests from all over Asia, Mr. Xu Guoqing, Chairman of Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard, highlighted the close cooperation with Germanischer Lloyd in his speech. Already 65 ships have been built or are under construction with class GL.

Hergen Thielemann joined Germanischer Lloyd in 1989. Starting as a surveyor, he assumed technical duties in several countries. As Vice President Division East Asia he was based in Singapore and since 2004 in Shanghai. Under his management, Germanischer Lloyd has built up a strong network in Korea, Japan, China, and South East Asian countries serving shipyards, shipping companies and supply industry.
