Channel Chieftain VI launches – powered by Doosan
The latest East Coast wind farm support vessel has been launched – powered by Doosan.
Channel Chieftain VI is a 19m aluminium wind farm support vessel built for Carlin Boat Charters which provides passenger and crew transfer services to wind farms across the UK and Northern Europe. Powered by a pair of 4V222TIM engines through Twin Disc gearboxes, developing 647kW at 2,100rpm supplied by WaterMota, Channel Chieftain will have a top speed of 25 knots and a service speed of 20 knots.
“The boats have to be able to cope with a 1.5 to 2m wave height and work 24-hours a day, 52-weeks of the year,” said Pat. “The main considerations are reliability, a good build, reliable engines and speed.”
He added: “We chose the Doosan engine as when working in Europe, the problem with back-up of electronic engines is that they can only be worked on if the engineer has a computer but the engine manufacturers don’t allow anyone else to have the computers – we have our own engineers so we are able to carry out our own repairs.”
WaterMota supplies engines up to 22 litres, reversing gearboxes, power take-offs and steering systems, gensets and power packs, plus sea water pumps.
