Harland and Wolff Awarded Design Contract

Harland and Wolff Technical Services Ltd, the design engineering consultancy of Harland and Wolff Group PLC, has been awarded a contract from Nantong Cosco KHI Ship Engineering Company (known as NACKS) to develop a new design for a Suezmax oil tanker. Nacks is a very successful joint venture between COSCO and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, making them one of the leading yards in China.

The design will be marketed by NACKS to shipowners worldwide and, following a build contract, Technical Services shall produce the detailed engineering for the entire vessel.

Welcoming this latest contract award, Don Wright, Managing Director of Harland and Wolff Technical Services Ltd, said : “It marks a breakthrough into the significant potential of the Far East market where the significant current and planned investment in shipbuilding facilities offers a tremendous opportunity for Technical Services to provide our expertise. “The basic design should be completed by the end of March 2002 and detailed engineering will provide further substantial workload into 2003. “This contract, coupled with the recent additional orders placed with Technical Services by NASSCO, San Diego, will represent in the region of US$ 5m of new business which we have secured in recent weeks.”
