Coral Leader to the Rescue

September 6, 2018

Coral Leader, a Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) owned by NYK supported the rescue operation of five people including two children onboard yacht.  The yacht was in distress in the Mediterranean Sea, just off Corsica.

The operation was conducted by French Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) on August 26 (local time) off the coast of France. The vessel Coral Leader is managed by Wallem Shipmanagement Limited

While Coral Leader was sailing from the port of Livorno, Italy, to the port of Tarragona, Spain, the vessel received a call from MRCC to cooperate in the rescue operation of a yacht.

The Coral Leader diverted course to help. The yacht was eventually spotted by the Wallem crew and a French navy rescue helicopter arrived onsite shortly after.

The ship stayed on the windward to protect the yacht from the strong wind and high waves until a total of the five were rescued by the helicopter.

"Due to adverse weather conditions, the Coral Leader was requested to remain on standby close to the yacht while the helicopter left the scene to get additional rescue equipment," said a statement from Wallem.

When the helicopter returned, all five people were successfully airlifted to safety. The Master of the Coral Leader, Capt. Monish Nesaraj and his crew were thanked by the French coastguard for their part in the rescue mission.
