YoungShip Young Corporation Award 2014
For its efforts to promote young employee development, marine insurer GARD has been awarded the 2014 YoungShip Young Corporation Award.
The shipping industry is acknowledged as one of Norway’s key strategic industries. If shipping is to stay ahead in global competition, and solve tomorrow’s challenges, we are fully dependant on attracting the brightest brains and the hardest-working employees, in order to compete with other core industries for critical competence.
As an organization for young professionals, YoungShip recognize that many companies already go the extra mile to promote young talents though trainee programs, international assignments and exciting career opportunities. To support these companies and young professionals in the maritime industry, YoungShip International has decided to launch an annual Young Corporation Award. The award will go to companies in the international maritime industry that excel in one or more of the following areas:
- Promoting young leaders, both within the company and externally
- Moving forward young talents
- Devoting time and resources to building the competence of young people in their organization
- Investing in trainee programs and other competence enhancing programs
- Supporting initiatives within the maritime community that promote young talent
Candidates for the 2014 award were nominated by young maritime executives from all over Norway, culminating in a prestigious short-list. This year’s nominees are well-recognized companies within their segments: North Atlantic Drilling, DOF. Gard, Robert Allen Ltd., Vard, Vroon Ship Management, Skuld and Subsea7. Of these, three candidates were short-listed by the jury: Gard, Robert Allen Ltd. and DOF.
It is our pleasure to announce Gard as the winner of the YoungShip Young Corporation Award 2014. The award was presented during this year’s international YoungShip conference, ShipCon, held in Ålesund on the 26th of September.
The ceremony was combined with the opening of the GCE BLUE Maritime annual conference.
The jury’s statement: “The 2014 winner of the Young Corporation Award promotes its young leaders through internal involvement in decision making and change processes. Young leaders are targeted and developed through a one-year leadership development program before taking on their leadership roles. Once established, they are challenged, supported and promoted by their line management in cooperation with the company`s internal academy.
With a business model and commitment to employee development and training, employees are given the opportunity to access world-class expertise, international experience, and the flexibility to move between disciplines and roles.
This year`s winner of the Young Corporation Award offers a 12-month trainee program designed to offer graduates and young professionals the opportunity to gain an understanding of the industry through placements in each of its departments, and in their offices around the world, enabling employees to build a strong network throughout the organization. The graduates follow a training and development program, which includes a combination of lectures, seminars and practical assignments, as well as the opportunity to attend a range of internal and external training courses.
This year`s winner established the Claes Isacson Scholarship for maritime education in 2013. This scholarship, awarded annually, helps young people to finance an education at the university level. They also have a “best student“ prize, which is awarded to the student achieving the highest marks in the study of Carriage of Goods by Sea at the Institute of Maritime Law, University of Southampton.
For the past three years, the winner of the Young Corporation Award has supported the World Maritime University through a sponsorship aiming to educate students from developing countries within the maritime industry. Over the past years they have also played a key role in supporting their local YoungShip branch.
The importance of young employees in the winning company is evident in the words of Managing Director Andre Krineberg: “We need to make sure we are able to retain and recruit talented people, and through our sponsorships, we are able to share knowledge and expertise among the wider shipping community.”
