Coast Guard Delivers Cutter to Alameda County

California’s Alameda County Sheriff's Office has added an 85 ft. cutter with twin .50-caliber machine guns to its growing fleet, which now numbers four vessels, according to an AP report. The U.S. Coast Guard turned over the boat to the Sheriff's Office under a program that diverts surplus military equipment to local law enforcement. The $4 million dollar cutter represents the largest single transfer in the 10-year-old program anywhere in the country. The boat, which has living quarters for 12, including a kitchen and a shower, will help patrol the Port of Oakland, the fourth busiest container port in the nation, according to the report. The Coast Guard had used it to patrol waterways in and around San Francisco Bay and the Los Angeles harbor. Source: AP
