December 8, 2005

Coast Guard Base Galveston is hosting Area 2 of the Texas Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) on Dec. 9. The event, called SEALIFT-2005, provides an opportunity for employers to visit and learn first hand what their reservist do while on duty. SEALIFT-2005 will feature a search and rescue demonstration, a static helicopter display, tours of Coast Guard cutters, a canine demonstration and a cruise on the 175-foot Coastal Buoy Tender Harry Claiborne. Also assisting in the event are members of the 147th Fighter Wing of the Texas Air National Guard from Ellington Field. The ESGR is an agency within the office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs. It was established in 1972 to promote cooperation and understanding between reserve and National Guard members and their civilian employers. The program also assists in the resolution of conflicts arising from an employees' military commitment. The ESGR is essential to maintaining operational readiness by providing professional development, mentoring and supporting community awareness. Today, nearly 50 percent of the nation's total available military manpower is comprised of reserves.
