Evergreen Investigates BENELUX Terminal

September 10, 2001

Evergreen Marine Corporation is investigating the possibilities of its own terminal for the Benelux countries. According to Nieuwsblad Transport (NT) Marcel Chang, President of Evergreen, did not have a preference for a location as long as it serves his needs. At the moment Evergreen calls at Rotterdam (two services, 150,000 boxes per year, ECT Home terminal), Antwerpen and Zeebrugge. Amsterdam seems not to be in the picture. NT: "At this moment it is not a suitable for us to go to Amsterdam. The concept of two sided handling is new to the world. It sounds very creative, but there are no experiences with it yet. I don't know how it will develop itself. Efficiency has to be proven first. Beside that the entrance to the terminal is not really great. There still is the old lock". Chang had a remark on Rotterdam too: "…In Rotterdam we are close to the market, but on the other hand the infrastructure on and around the ECT Home terminal, where we are since 1979, is somewhat outdated".
