Blue World, Tuco Marine to Develop Methanol Fuel Cell-powered Workboats

Blue World and Tuco have agreed to develop and demonstrate a flexible methanol fuel cell solution for electric workboats. The Blue World methanol fuel cell technology is designed to provide a green alternative to the maritime industry and depending on boat type, the flexible fuel cell-powered solution can be used for auxiliary power or propulsion. The methanol fuel cell system provides low maintenance, has zero SOx, NOx, and particle emission as well as a CO2 neutral operation. Tuco supplies ProZero series, a range of fast boats for professionals.

Alfa Laval Prepares to Test Marine Biofuel

Alfa Laval says its 2800 m2 testing space – already equipped for today’s oil and gas fuels – has been readied for testing with biofuels. Ice Chart Data Satellite Network to Launch in 2022

A newly established consortium is going to develop a network for low Earth orbit satellites delivering ice chart data to ships at sea. A new research project called MARIOT (Maritime IoT) is going to develop a low Earth orbit satellite network based on the new VDES (VHF Data Exchange System) technology. Offshore Wind: SeaTwirl Secures Funding

Swedish floating wind turbine player SeaTwirl has joined the Ocean Energy Scale-Up Alliance (OESA) that has been granted funding from the Interreg North Sea Region.SeaTwirl is a vertical floating wind turbine that was tested off the west coast of Sweden in 2011. Alfa Laval EGR-HPE Economizer a Boon

With Tier III NOx limits entering into force in North America and the US Caribbean in January 2016, the time has come for many ship owners to choose their method of compliance. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) on MAN B&W engines has strong advantages on its own. But combined with a new pressurized EGR economizer from Alfa Laval, it also offers the potential for massive fuel savings. “EGR provides Tier III NOx compliance with a very compact footprint, but compliance itself is only part of the full potential,” says John Pedersen, Business Manager, Boilers, Combustion & Heaters at Alfa Laval. “Working closely with MAN Diesel & Turbo to optimize the EGR technology, we saw additional opportunities through our expertise in marine boilers.

Pressurized EGR Boiler Ready For Testing

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) has firmly shown its ability to comply with Tier III NOx limits, which will enter into force in January 2016. Developed by MAN Diesel & Turbo, the EGR process already relies on Alfa Laval’s PureNOx, which provides the vital cleaning of the scrubber water. Now Alfa Laval is cooperating with MAN Diesel & Turbo to implement an EGR boiler, which could potentially add major energy benefits to the secure emission compliance. Over 1000 hours of EGR operation have now been achieved aboard the Maersk Cardiff, a container newbuild from A.P.

Bio-Marine Fuel Refinery Planned for Denmark

The Port of Frederikshavn, Steeper Energy and Aalborg University have partnered to establish what they claim is the world’s first biomass-based plant in Denmark to produce a sustainable sulphur-free marine fuel that will serve over 100,000 vessels passing through the port annually. The Danish Minister for Trade and European Affairs Nick Hækkerup welcomes the new partnership: “This is a great example of a public-private partnership with a huge potential both for the environment and for business and job creation. I am very satisfied that a Canadian company like Steeper taps into the strong Danish bioenergy cluster and cooperates with Aalborg University on the development of new sustainable energy solutions.

New CEO at Eiva

New CEO and completion of succession change at Eiva. Jeppe Nielsen, 44, will take over the position as CEO as of 24 October 2011 at Eiva. Jeppe Nielsen has a masters degree in computer science from Aalborg University and has until recently held a position as Senior Vice President at Systematic, where he has held various positions during the last 19 years and gained experience within sales, business development and strategy. Prior to this Jeppe Nielsen has experience from software development and delivery of mission critical IT systems. As a comment to his new position Jeppe Nielsen says. “Eiva is a well run company which serves international customers with highly advanced software and system solutions which are business critical.
