Bureau Veritas has gained accreditation from United Kingdom Accreditation Services (UKAS), in their pilot scheme, to carry out assessments and verifications for compliance with the European Union’s Maritime Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (EU MRV) regulation. The regulation, part of the EU’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, requires operators to monitor and report on CO2 emissions based on ship fuel consumption. It applies to all merchant ships of 5,000 GT or above on journeys that call at an EU port.

The first group of candidates has successfully completed the full Protection and Indemnity Qualification (P&IQ). The examination program was launched in 2010 by the International Group of P&I Clubs (IG) to support education in P&I insurance. The successful candidates were presented with their certificates by Grantley Berkeley, Chairman of the IG and of Tindall Riley (Britannia) Limited, at an awards ceremony to mark the candidates’ achievements held on 12th November 2013 at the Watermen’s Hall in London.

The Nautical Institute announces today that it is to expand its accreditation services. Members input, which has fed into the Institute’s current five year strategic plan, highlights that focus on competency and professionalism across the entire maritime industry is greater than ever. Under previous strategic plans, the Institute has developed model courses for leadership and management training, raised awareness within the industry of the need for this training, and accredited training providers for these important courses. The Institute continues to build upon their international standard for training and certification of dynamic positioning operators, established in 1983, as well as accrediting the extensive network of international DP training centres.
