After 10 years at the helm, Harry Bolton handed over command of the Training Ship Golden Bear Wednesday at California State University Maritime Academy.Bolton, a 1978 graduate of the Academy, returned to Cal Maritime on May 1, 2008 after a 30-year career with American Maritime Officers. Twenty of those years were with American Overseas Marine Corporation (AMSEA) aboard the original preposition ships based out of Guam, Saipan and Diego Garcia. Bolton began sailing as Master in 1985, only seven years after graduation.Dr.

Liberty Global Logistics LLC (LGL) said its newest U.S.-flag Roll-On/Roll-Off (RO/RO) vessel, the M/V Liberty Peace, has commenced service. The flag of the vessel was transferred from Norwegian flag by the captain of the M/V NOCC Baltic to Jeffrey M. Raider, the U.S. Captain of the vessel. The M/V Liberty Peace was delivered to its owners in March 2017. The pure car/truck carrier (PCTC) will proceed to the U.S. West Coast to load cargo, then continue westbound across the Pacific to destinations in the Far East and Middle East. The vessel was designed to transport commercial vehicles, rolling stock and project cargo, as well as military wheeled and containerized equipment such as M-ATVs, HUMVEEs, MRAPs, armored personnel carriers, tanks, helicopters and unit equipment.

The Maritime Administration’s ‘Call to Action’ will address Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment in the Maritime Industry. Obtained this morning from reliable industry sources, the final agenda for what promises to a lively and possibly contentious meeting set up by the U.S. Maritime Administration and its U.S. Merchant Marine Academy leaders for industry stakeholders has been released. U.S. Maritime Administrator Paul ‘Chip’ Jaenichen will kick off the meeting with opening remarks, after which a presentation that will outline the ‘size and scope’ of the problem will be given. A wide range of industry stakeholders are expected to be in attendance in Washington, DC on Friday. These include shipowners, government officials, maritime academy representatives, MERPAC personnel and many others.

Plans for a second heavy icebreaker for service on the Great Lakes have taken another step toward reality with Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.) including $2 million for initial survey and design work for a vessel that is at least as capable as the current icebreaker Mackinaw in the committee report on the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations bill. Ohio Congressman David Joyce (R) has been named a 2016 Great Lakes Legislator of the Year by the largest labor/management coalition representing shipping on America’s Fourth Sea Coast. Great Lakes Maritime Task Force (GLMTF) annually presents the award to legislators who have promoted shipping on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway. Rep. On Thursday evening, October 1, 2016, the ship EL FARO went missing. The ship was en route from Jacksonville, Florida to San Juan, Puerto Rico. On Monday, four days after the ship vanished, the Coast Guard concluded it sank near the Bahamas in about 15,000 feet of water. One unidentified body in a survival suit was spotted, and the search continued until today for the other 32 crew members. Shipping company TOTE and shipbuilder NASSCO on Saturday launched Perla del Caribe, the second of two Marlin Class ships – the first containerships in the world to be powered by natural gas. The christening and launch ceremony took place at General Dynamics NASSCO’s shipyard in San Diego. The 764-foot-long Perla del Caribe and sister ship, christened Isla Bella, are Jones Act vessels built for the Puerto Rican trade for TOTE Shipholdings and will be operated by TOTE subsidiary Sea Star Line out of Jacksonville, Fla.

TOTE Services has promoted Michael J. (Mick) Kondracki to director of labor relations and risk management effective March 16, 2015, as announced by the company’s president, Phil Greene, Jr.   In his new role, Kondracki will oversee risk management, human resources and promote the continued business relations with the Seafarers International Union (SIU) and the American Maritime Officers (AMO).   Kondracki joins the TOTE Services executive team with more than 26 years in the maritime industry in numerous executive roles.    He earned a BS in marine engineering from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, an MBA from the University of New Orleans, a Masters Certificate in Project Management from George Washington University and a Diploma from the U.S. Naval War College, Staff & Command.
