Crowley Puerto Rico Services, Inc. has broken ground on a $48.5-million construction project for a new pier at its Isla Grande Terminal in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the company announced. The maiden voyage of Crowley Liner Services’ new flat-deck barge will end on Monday when the barge is scheduled to arrive in San Juan with a full 400-load delivery. The vessel’s deployment is a major part of Crowley’s rapid response to the sudden departure of Horizon Lines from the Puerto Rico trade. Since mid December, Crowley has, through a number of service enhancements, created additional weekly cargo carrying capacity for about 780 loads – or 78 percent the 1,000 loads previously transported by Horizon Lines in an average week.

San Juan, Puerto Rico - Crowley Maritime Corporation’s liner services group and Puerto Rico Teamsters Union Local 901 have reached an agreement on a new five-year labor contract covering union employees working at Crowley’s San Juan terminal. The new contract is effective from March 27, 2012, through March 26, 2017. “This new agreement continues Crowley’s commitment to the trade and our long-term desire to grow and reinvest in the services we provide to our customers in Puerto Rico and the U.S.,” said John Douglass, senior vice president and general manager, Puerto Rico and Caribbean services. Crowley has operated in Puerto Rico since 1954. During that time, it has developed a strong and lasting relationship with the Puerto Rico community and its union team members.

Crowley Maritime Corporation announced that Jose "Pache" Ayala has been promoted to general manager of operations for the company's liner services group in Puerto Rico. In this role, he will direct port operations, equipment control, information technology and materials management, and he will have responsibilities in finance and administration. Ayala will be domiciled in San Juan and will report to Rudy Leming, Crowley's vice president of marine and terminal operations in Jacksonville, Fla.

Jose Ayala has been promoted to director of labor relations for Crowley Maritime Corporation. Ayala will remain domiciled in Jacksonville and continue reporting to Steve Demeroutis, Crowley's vice president of labor relations. In his new position, Ayala is responsible for all labor relations activities for the East Coast/Caribbean terminal operations including grievance handling, negotiations, contract administration, compliance resolution and relationship building with Crowley's union representatives and personnel. Ayala joined Crowley in 2009 as intermodal manager in Jacksonville before being promoted to representative, labor relations. Prior to that he served as president of the Teamsters for five years in San Juan and two years as vice president.
