Global Port Congestion, High Shipping Rates Will Linger Into 2023

Global port congestion is set to continue until at least early 2023 and keep spot freight rates elevated, logistics executives said on Wednesday, urging charterers to switch to long-term contracts to manage shipping costs. The COVID-19 outbreak has lengthened ship delivery times since 2020, pushing up freight costs, while the Russia-Ukraine conflict and lockdowns in Shanghai have added to supply chain disruptions this year."We believe the current congestions, not only the ports but also the landside infrastructure…

BMT Awarded LNG Engineering For Côte d’Ivoire

BMT Asia Pacific (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, has been appointed Owners Engineer and lead design consultant by Endeavor Energy, for the development of the LNG storage and regasification facility as part of the Songon Gas-to-Power Project in Côte d’Ivoire. Songon, a greenfield development, will consist of combined cycle gas to power generation with an integrated fuel solution, featuring purpose-built LNG infrastructure and a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU). This appointment builds on the successful relationship established with Endeavor last year in developing Africa’s first ever LNG import terminal via Endeavor and GE’s Ghana 1000 Power Project.

As Freight Rates Fall, LNG Shippers Brace Consolidation

Faltering LNG demand, growing tanker fleet drag on freight rates. Shippers who ply the seas to deliver liquefied natural gas (LNG) in massive tankers are likely to face a wave of consolidation and asset sales, with freight rates plunging as a growing fleet clashes with tepid demand. Companies that manage to weather the shakeout in one of the key sectors in the global shipping industry should be in a prime position, however, to benefit from a string of new LNG projects expected to start trickling online by the end of next year. "I see more mergers and acquisitions, more consolidation and a lot more joint ventures as things get tougher," said Andrew Bridson, business development manager at maritime consultancy BMT Asia Pacific. "That is not a bad thing.

The Need for Marine Spatial Planning

The sea is not empty. Ports, harbors and waterways have to manage an ever growing volume and mix of recreational activity and heavy commercial activity - at times across the same compact waterspace. This creates a series of challenging marine planning requirements that need to be addressed. While land use is often well zoned and tightly regulated, there is frequently limited designation of waterspace outside of specific fairway / anchorage demarcations and protected ecological marine areas.

Report: Hong Kong Box Terminals Should be Moved

A study says Hong Kong will eventually have to move its container terminals out of Kwai Tsing to remain competitive. A study by think tank SD Advocates, the Chinese University and BMT Asia Pacific says that Hong Kong needs to relocate the container terminals from Kwai Tsing to another part of the city, if it wants to remain a competitive global logistics hub in the long term. The terminals, opened more than 40 years ago, were outdated because they were designed for direct cargo to and from the city. They were built to handle direct South China export containers that have all but disappeared. Around 70 percent of the containers handled by the 24 berths are transshipment cargo and require thousands of inter-terminal trucking moves.

Following an in-depth review of the containerised cargo market in Hong Kong, BMT developed a plan to enhance the competitiveness of Hong Kong’s port sector via a series of staged improvements to the existing container terminals and facilities, through the allocation of more berths, barging sites and back-up land. “We want to make sure we spend money wisely.

HK Shipping Industry Needs Direction Say Group

A group of shipping sector directors urge the future direction of HK's maritime industry to be set out and implemented by the government.
