Gulf Copper and Manufacturing Corporation has appointed Jonathan Whitworth as a member to its board of directors.Whitworth, a graduate of Texas A&M University at Galveston (TAMUG), brings his extensive working history and experience back to Texas. He holds an MBA in Finance with a focus on marine business and currently serves as vice chairman of the TAMUG Board of Visitors.“I feel very fortunate to have retired and moved back to Galveston Island, a city which has a rich maritime history and a place with great memories for both me and my wife,” said Whitworth.

Philip M. Bilden has been elected to Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) board of directors, effective November 7. Bilden retired last year as a co-founding member of the private equity firm HarbourVest Partners. He began his career in Boston in 1991 and relocated to Hong Kong in 1996 to establish the firm’s Asian subsidiary. Throughout his 25-year tenure at HarbourVest Partners, Bilden served in senior leadership roles in the firm’s global management, including the firm’s six-person executive committee responsible for governance.

Susan Hayman, Foss Maritime VP of HSQE & External Affairs, has been nominated by President Barack Obama to the United States Merchant Marine Academy's (USMMA) Board of Visitors. This key administrative post is for a term of two years, commencing at the beginning of each Congress. The board is made up of Congressional representatives and Presidential appointees, including two alumni. It provides oversight, advice and recommendations on matters relating to USMMA. Hayman is a 1980 graduate of USMMA and a 1986 graduate of Harvard Business School.

Northrop Grumman Corporation’s (NYSE: NOC) board of directors has elected Stephen D. Yslas, 61, corporate vice president and general counsel effective Jan. 1, 2009. Yslas succeeds W. As part of the Naval Sea Systems Command's efforts to become more efficient throughout the organization, the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) are being realigned. This will allow the centers to operate across organizational boundaries and respond more quickly and effectively to the needs of the Fleet. The realignment is the result of NAVSEA's focus to support Sea Power 21 and the Chief of Naval Operations' unique challenge to NAVSEA's leadership to find ways to become more efficient and effective. Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) honored its best and brightest at a ceremony held in early November. The college formally recognized alumni success and achievement, student academic success, and faculty achievement at its annual Celebration of Achievement on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006. Included among those recognized were three outstanding college alumni. All were inducted into the college’s Wall of Honor. Initiated in 1997, the college’s Wall of Honor was created to recognize alumni, who, through achievements in professional and civic life, have brought honor to themselves and to Maine Maritime Academy. Inductees are selected from nominations made at large by alumni and the public.

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) named Robert E. Kramek president elect of the organization at its recent Annual Maritime Technology Conference & Expo in Houston, Texas. Kramek, President and Chief Operating Officer of ABS will commence his term January 1, 2007, succeeding current SNAME President Dr. Roger H. Compton. Admiral Kramek is a former Commandant of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) from which he retired as a Four Star Admiral. Admiral Robert E. Kramek graduated with honors from the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Academy with a B.S. in engineering in 1961 and attended postgraduate schools at the University of Michigan, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Alaska.

George J. Ryan will end his 20-plus year career as President of Lake Carriers' Association on January 15.
