IMO’s Climate Change Mandate

An audience of lawyers and academics have heard that the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) gives a clear mandate for IMO to prevent, reduce and control pollution of the marine environment from or through the atmosphere and to address climate change. The International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Fred Kenney, speaking at seminar in London on November 14, said that Article 212 of UNCLOS complemented the Paris Agreement on Climate Change to give IMO Member States a clear role to continue to build on the work already done to address the energy efficiency of ships. BOGSOA Elects New Chairman

Sayeed H. Chowdhury, chairman and ceo of HRC Shipping Ltd (HRC Group), the Multiport member in Bangladesh, has been elected chairman of the Bangladesh Oceangoing Ship Owners' Association (BOGSOA). Elected at the association's annual general meeting at the end of June, Chowdhury will hold the position for a two-year term. Also a member of the British Institute of Management, Chowdhury founded the HRC Group in 1991. Although initially set up as a ship agency, it is now a diversified conglomerate of sixteen companies including ship agency, chartering, shipowning and distribution. With offices in Dhaka, Chittagong and Khulna, HRC Shipping Ltd is the largest private sector shipowning company in Bangladesh.
