China Classification Society (CCS) announced it has recently granted approval in principle (AIP) to a 85,000 DWT ammonia-fueled bulk carrier design it codeveloped with Singapore’s SDTR Marine Pte Ltd. Liberian Registry Grants AiP for Anemoi's Rotor Sail

MOL's Ammonia-powered Bulk Carrier Design Gets AIP from ClassNK

Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and trading company Mitsui & Co., Ltd. announced they have received approval in principle (AIP) from classification society ClassNK for the design of a large ammonia-powered bulk carrier.MOL and Mitsui jointly determined the size and specifications of the vessel, and both companies entrusted Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. for design of the vessel. The AIP covers a 210,000 DWT Capesize bulker.The design calls for a main engine fueled by ammonia, which emits no CO2 when burned, thereby achieving zero CO2 emissions during the voyage.

World’s First Methanol-powered Newcastlemax Bulker Gets ABS AIP

Bluetech Finland Signs Bulk Carrier Design Contract

Navibulgar has contracted 4+2 Bluetech 45 handymax bulk carriers from Yangzijiang.   The Bluetech 45 design is based on the successful Bluetech 42 design. The ship will have a length of 190 m, maximum draught of 10.8 m, a dwt of 45 000 tons, a large hold volume for its class and an ice class 1C.   Bluetech bulk carrier designs have the largest hold volume and deadweight and lowest fuel consumption in their class, making them the most eco-friendly on the market. The designs are marketed worldwide by Clarksons Platou Shipbroking.

LNG-fueled Newcastlemax Bulk Carrier Design Unveiled

Project partners BHP, Fortescue, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), Rio Tinto, SDARI, U-Ming, Woodside, and DNV GL presented the results from stage one of their “Green Corridor” joint industry project (JIP), which demonstrated the commercial potential and technical feasibility of bulkers fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the iron ore and coal trade between Australia and China. The result is an LNG-fueled Newcastlemax design which is in the process of receiving Approval in Principle (AiP) from DNV GL. The idea of developing LNG-fueling infrastructure for the vessels operating on the Australia–China iron ore and coal trade route has been contemplated by major charterers, ship owners and operators for many years.

ABS Grants AIP for LNG-fueled Design Concept

ABS has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) for the Seatransporter-DF, a dual-fuel design concept developed by Algoship Designers Ltd. of Nassau, Bahamas. The design has the capability to accommodate multiple engine types as well as Type-C or membrane containment systems for liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel. “Technically innovative designs that advance the use of LNG as fuel will play an increasingly important role in the marine sector, and ABS is working alongside industry to enable this critical technological advancement,” said ABS Executive Vice President for Global Marine, Dr. Kirsi Tikka.

LNG-Fueled Vessels Go Big with 'Project Forward'

ABS, a provider of classification services to the global marine and offshore industries, has teamed up with partners Arista Shipping, Deltamarin, GTT and Wärtsilä in the “Project Forward” joint development project (JDP) to develop a dry bulk carrier concept that employs LNG as fuel. The goal is to develop a Kamsarmax bulk carrier design to be the first of this type suitable for worldwide services powered by LNG in compliance with the International Maritime Organization’s Energy Efficiency Design Index 2025 standards, NOx Tier III and Marpol Annex VI SOx emission levels.

Wärtsilä Joins LNG-powered Bulker Project

ABS Reflects on Strong 2015 Performance

ABS held its Annual Meeting on April 26, 2016 in New York, where Chairman, President & CEO Christopher J. In 2015, the ABS-classed fleet surpassed 230 million gross tons (mgt), a nearly five percent growth from the previous year. The largest areas of expansion for the class society came from the tanker, gas carrier, containership, bulk carrier, offshore support vessel and offshore production unit sectors. In total, more than 841 new assets entered the ABS-classed fleet, bringing its total to 12,614 assets.

Dual Fuel Bulker Gets AIP from Class NK

Classification society ClassNK has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) to a 98,000 dwt LNG-fueled bulk carrier design developed by Maritime Innovation Japan Corporation (MIJAC).   ClassNK said it carried out the safety evaluation of the vessel and approved the concept design based on the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code), which will come into effect from January 1, 2017, as well as ClassNK’s Guidelines for Gas Fueled Ships.   The vessel will be fitted with a 2,000 cubic meter capacity LNG tank (IMO Type B) and an LNG fuel supply system. The main engine and main generator engines will all operate on dual fuel.

Industry Stakeholders to Develop LNG-Powered Bulker Design

Deltamarin, Arista Shipping, ABS and GTT announce Project Forward, a joint development project to equip the dry bulk carriers of the future with LNG propulsion. The project, led by Athens-based bulk carrier owner Arista Shipping, began officially in May this year. The aim is to develop a commercially feasible LNG-powered dry bulk carrier design capable of complying with International Maritime Organization’s Energy Efficiency Design Index 2025 standards, NOx Tier III and Marpol Annex VI SOx emission levels. The concept design will be based on the highly-optimised Deltamarin B.Delta design suitable for ships between 82,000 and 210,000dwt. It will employ GTT’s membrane-type LNG tanks for fuel containment.

Gas Carrier Concept Stems from Bulker Design

Deltamarin Ltd and Brevik Technology AS, a VARD affiliate, have joined forces to develop a novel multigas carrier design concept that combines the design of Deltamarin’s B.Delta and the new-generation patented cylindrical gas tanks by Brevik Technology. By combining the B.Delta design and separate cylindrical gas containment tanks, a cost-efficient and easy-to-build solution is now available to the gas carrier market, the developers explained. The design can be utilized for LNG, LPG, LEG and ethane carriers. “Up to now gas carriers have been complex and expensive to design and construct.
