Malaysia Detains Chinese Ship Linked to Suspected Illegal Salvage of British WW2 Wrecks

Malaysia's maritime authorities on Monday said cannon shells believed to be from World War Two have been found on a China-registered bulk carrier ship detained at the weekend for anchoring in its waters without permission.The discovery comes amid reports this month that scavengers have targeted two British World War Two wrecks off the coast of Malaysia - the HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse - which were sunk by Japanese torpedoes in 1941, just three days after the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.

Tsuneishi Says Built 45 Ships Last Year

Japan's Tsuneishi Holdings Corporation said that its  shipbuilding business output was nearly flat with the construction of 45 ships in the fiscal year ending December 2016. However, ship orders declined markedly due to the impact of last-minute orders before environmental regulations went into effect in 2015. Bulk Carrier Rescues Fishermen off Peru

The commercial bulk carrier Global Vega rescued seven fishermen in distress on May 21 off the coast of Peru. While Global Vega was sailing from the port of Acajutla, El Salvador, to the port of Callao, Peru, the vessel came upon a fishing boat having engine trouble. Food and fresh water were provided to the fishermen and their boat was moored to Global Vega. Afterward, the fishermen and their boat were safely delivered to the Peruvian Coast Guard. Hijacking Suspected By Somali Pirates

Somali pirates are suspected of hijacking a bulk carrier ship on one of the world's crucial trade routes, Reuters reported. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations piracy watchdog said on its website it had received a report from a vessel under attack and possibly boarded off the coast of war-ravaged Yemen. It gave no further details. However, a security source working at the Puntland Marine Police Force said the vessel was Tuvalu-flagged and is known as OS35. Graeme Gibbon-Brooks, the head of private company Dryad Maritime Intelligence, said industry sources had confirmed the hijacking. "Vessels transiting the area are advised to exercise extreme caution," UKMTO said, without giving more details.

Bulk Carrier Runs Aground in the Suez Canal

A capsize bulk carrier ship has run aground in the Suez Canal at 69 kilometers at about 10:30 a.m. local time February 25, and is still grounded on same position, GAC reported, as per information available from the Suez Canal Authority.   According to GAC, the Suez Canal has not closed, but there are some delays on the convoys’ movements and the starting time of the convoys has been amended accordingly, as follows: Northbound convoy started today at 9:45 a.m. local time (first vessel). Southbound convoy started today at 2 a.m. local time and waiting in Great Bitter lakes.   Further traffic delays are expected until the vessel is refloated by Suez Canal Authority tugs.

World Industry Drives Freight Rates Up

In 2000, freight rates turned out at a significantly higher level than during the previous year. On an average basis, tripcharter rates for Capesizes (150,000 dwt) more than doubled to $17,600/day, while rates for modern Panamaxes increased from $7,500 to $11,100/day. For Handymaxes, tripcharter rates went up from $6,900 to $9,200/day. The freight market showed a steady rise through the first three quarters of the year, but softened somewhat during its final three months. The main cause of the firmer freight market was the strong upturn in world economic growth, and particularly in the U.S. The strong U.S. economy combined with imports of finished goods created strong support for industrial production in and exports from the rest of the world.
