Safety the Focus as Heavy Lifting Picks Up

Heavy lift operations offshore are an awe-inspiring feat, but an operation that requires consistent monitoring of man, machine and procedure to ensure they are conducted in as an efficient and safe manner as possible. Due to a growing focus on safety related to subsea lifting operations, DNV GL recently established a Joint Industry Project (JIP) to develop practical methods for reducing the risks and lifetime cost of steel wire ropes for subsea lifting applications, using an integrated systems approach.

Caley Develops Deepwater Lowering System for Gorgon Project

Handling systems specialist, Caley Ocean Systems has been awarded a contract by Subsea 7 to design, manufacture and supply a deepwater lowering system (DLS). The DLS will initially be deployed by Subsea 7 on the Chevron-operated Gorgon project, located off the northwest coast of Western Australia, to lower subsea structures weighing up to 950Te in water depths in excess of 1,300m. The DLS comprises two double drum traction and storage winches and fully redundant controls, all mounted on an integrated grillage structure for rapid mobilization onto the pipelay and heavy lift vessel Sapura 3000.

Caley Upgrades Saipem Reel Carousel

Offshore handling systems specialist, Caley Ocean Systems completed the refurbishment and upgrade of a 2,500-ton, 25-meter diameter reel carousel for Italian offshore contractor Saipem. The reel carousel will be used to transport umbilicals and flowlines from Norway to China on Big Lift heavy lift vessel Happy Rover, for the deepwater Liwan 3-1 field gas project in the South China Sea. Originally supplied over 15 years ago by Caley, the carousel has been extensively used by Saipem on a wide range of projects.

Offshore Cable Turntable Order for Jan De Nul

Jan De Nul Group to supply a 5,400 tonnes capacity cable turntable to offshore handling systems specialist Caley Ocean Systems. The turntable, including a 5 tonnes and 10 tonnes deck tensioner, is destined for the vessel Willem de Vlamingh. In addition to this turntable, Caley is supplying a modular loading tower assembly comprising loading arm, inboard chute, and control cabin. Caley Ocean Systems Get Offshore Cable Turntable Order

UK's Caley is to modify the vessel and install the turntable for dredging & marine engineering company Jan de Nul NV. The contract is for the supply of a 5,400Te capacity cable turntable for the MPV Willem De Vlamingh. Mid 2013, Jan de Nul is installing 245kV export cable connecting the Northwind Offshore Wind power plant, on the Lodewijkbank off the coast of Oostende, to the Belgian power grid. In the first quarter of 2013, the MPV Willem De Vlamingh is to be outfitted for cable laying offshore.

Caley Ocean Systems contracted by Babcock to supply rescue boat davits for new Irish Naval Service ship. The all-weather Caley davits are designed for rapid deployment, enabling boats to be held in readiness and launched in seconds, even in Sea State 6 (5 metre (16ft) significant waves) conditions. Caley Davits for Japanese Vessels

Caley Ocean Systems has supplied davits for four Japanese Fisheries patrol vessels. The davits will allow the rapid deployment and retrieval of a range of high speed workboats, even in Sea State 6 conditions, during patrol operations. The all-weather Caley davits enable rigid inflatable boats (RIBS) to be held in readiness and launched in seconds. Crew safety is paramount to the davit's handling system which features anti-pendulation control for pitch and roll damping and reduction of pendulum swing.

Caley Winch and A-frame Systems for HHI Oceanographic RV

Offshore handling systems specialist, Caley Ocean Systems has been awarded a contract to supply oceanographic winches and A-frame systems to Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for a new oceanographic research vessel. The state-of-the-art, ocean-going, vessel is capable of surveying to the full ocean depth (10,000m), using advanced exploration capabilities. Caley is providing bespoke oceanographic winches designed to handle high tension, heavy loads, featuring 'SMART' control systems for fully active heave compensation, and variable frequency drives.
