NYK Orders Man Energy Engines for Four LNG Carriers

Japanese shipping giant NYK has ordered eight ME-GA engines from Man Energy Solutions for four liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers.The order is for eight 5G70ME-GA Mk. 10.5 engines related to the construction of four 174,000 cbm. Partners Set Out to Develop CO2 Carrier Designs

Oshima, DNV GL Sign Strategic Cooperation

Spurred by the IMO strategy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, Oshima Shipbuilding and classification society DNV GL have signed a long-term strategic cooperation to conduct research and development together on new bulk carrier designs. DNV GL, New Dayang Shipbuilding Agree on JDP

As part of the strategic cooperation agreement signed between SUMEC Marine Company Ltd. and DNV GL last year, SUMEC’s New Dayang Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and DNV GL have agreed on a Joint Development Project (JDP) to update the Crown 63.5k Bulk Carrier design. The agreement was signed at the Nor-Shipping trade fair in Oslo.The JDP will include the application of the new harmonized common structural rules (HCSR) to the design, as well as a focus on improving the energy efficiency of the design, particularly in the ship board machinery and electrical systems.

ABS AIPs for Hudong-Zhonghua Gas Carrier Design

The global provider of classification and technical advisory services to the marine and offshore industries ABS has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) to two new gas carrier designs from Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding.The two new vessel designs are for a 200,000cbm LNG Carrier and a 147,000cbm Very Large Ethane Carrier (VLEC).“ABS is proud to support the pioneering work of Hudong Zhonghua in the design and delivery of gas carriers. ABS Awards AIP to HHI’s Deepwater FLNG Hull

ABS granted Approval in Principle (AIP) to Hyundai Heavy Industries’ (HHI) Deepwater Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) hull design.HHI advises the Newbuilding Conversion FLNG hull design for offshore application can be constructed for about 80 percent less than the cost of a conventional FLNG hull. It is based on LNG carrier designs combined with the requirements for FLNG production, such as structural reinforcements to take topside module load and a hull designed to allow up to 25 years operation without dry-docking.“ABS is the market leader in the classification of offshore drilling and production units, including FLNG vessels, with more than 150 floating oil and gas facilities in the ABS-classed fleet,” said ABS Vice President Global Gas Solutions, Patrick Janssens.

Bluetech Finland Signs Bulk Carrier Design Contract

Navibulgar has contracted 4+2 Bluetech 45 handymax bulk carriers from Yangzijiang.   The Bluetech 45 design is based on the successful Bluetech 42 design. The ship will have a length of 190 m, maximum draught of 10.8 m, a dwt of 45 000 tons, a large hold volume for its class and an ice class 1C.   Bluetech bulk carrier designs have the largest hold volume and deadweight and lowest fuel consumption in their class, making them the most eco-friendly on the market. The designs are marketed worldwide by Clarksons Platou Shipbroking.

Toyota Backs Japanese $1.8 Bln LNG Vessel Order

Japanese car manufacturer Toyota Motor Corporation is turning to LNG-powered ships to transport its cars across the globe, according to a report from Japanese daily Nikkei. The company has backed an investment in up to 20 LNG-powered car carriers with the capacity to carry 7,000 vehicles each, as it  is preparing for the environmental regulations that will go into force in 2020. Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) and Toyota’s Toyofuji Shipping are expected to be in the running for the contract, which is estimated to be approximately $1.83 billion. A specific timeline for the orders was not given, as the move is believed to be still in its initial stage.

Samsung Heavy Industries, DNV GL Partner for LNG Carrier Design

DNV GL and Samsung Heavy Industries. Co., Ltd (SHI) signed a joint development project (JDP) agreement focused on the development of new LNG carrier designs. Mun-Keun Ha, Senior Executive Vice President of SHI, and Tommy Bjørnsen, DNV GL’s Regional Manager Maritime Korea & Japan, signed the agreement at the DNV GL Group head office in Høvik, during Nor-Shipping week. The JDP aims to develop two 30K LNG carrier designs, one with membrane type LNG tanks and one with type-C (pressurized) LNG tanks.

ABS Initiative Improves Bulker Loading Safety

ABS has introduced a new service and analysis tool that will allow atypical cargoes on bulk carriers. The software streamlines loading analysis and provides a safer approach to loading atypical bulk cargo. “ABS understands that maintaining a leadership role means finding ways to improve safety and efficiency for industry,” says ABS Executive Vice President for Global Marine Dr. Kirsi Tikka. In developing this new software and service, ABS has taken a comprehensive approach to steel coil loading. This new capability helps improve efficiency, enabling faster decisions regarding the safety of nontraditional loads. Using the ABS loading analysis software enables timely and accurate decisions about the achievable safety for steel coil loads that are not included in the loading manual.

DNV GL Grants AiP for Composite Tween Deck Design

A new 65k open-hatch general cargo carrier design concept jointly developed by DNV GL and Oshima Shipbuilding has been launched at Nor-Shipping. Intended for a wide range of project cargoes and packaged goods, the vessel design includes composite tween decks to maximize space utilization and save weight. This tween deck solution was also awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) by DNV GL, presented to Sho Minami, the CEO of Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd, by Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO DNV GL – Maritime.

Damen Plunges into LNG Market

Damen Shipyards Group’s range of Liquefied Gas Carriers is a response to the changes seen in the maritime LNG market in recent years. The Dutch company’s designs meet a variety of capacity requirements, from 500 m3 to 7,500 m3. The maritime LNG market has long been faced with the conundrum around the subject of supply and demand. Ship owners have been reluctant to make the switch to LNG because of the lack of bunkering infrastructure. At the same time, development of bunker infrastructure has been slow to get off the ground due to the low demand from the market.

LNG-fueled Bulker Ordered from Korea

Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) has signed a contract to build a 50,000 dwt bulk carrier with ILSHIN LOGISTICS. The project is a collaboration between POSCO and ILSHIN LOGISTICS to develop the first in a new generation of ships for greener shipping. The ship represents a significant step-up for the industry as it is the largest bulk carrier ever ordered to use LNG as fuel. When delivered in the fourth quarter of 2017, the ship will transport limestone cargoes in the Korean coastal trade for steelmaker POSCO. Lloyd’s Register (LR) and the Korean Register (KR) will provide dual classification and certification, verifying compliance with the International Gas Fuel (IGF) Code.

Wärtsilä Debuts LNG Carrier Designs

The unmatched track record and expertise that Wärtsilä has in LNG fuel solutions for the marine industry is again emphasised with the company's launching of a new series of LNG Carrier ship designs. This series of designs is the latest addition to Wärtsilä's ship design portfolio and is an important part of the company's strategic programme under the theme "Taking Merchant Shipping into the Gas Age". The series comprises four  vessel designs, the WSD59 3K, WSD59 6.5K, WSD55 12K, and WSD50 20K, all of which have been developed in close cooperation with customers to produce vessels that are appropriate for the global LNG infrastructure and applicable for both ocean going and inland water operations.

Mega Ships, Mega Challenges

The mega container ships raising concerns among vessel operators, insurers and regulators about the potential for catastrophic accidents. Shipping lines have sought to stay competitive by running larger, more fuel-efficient container ships in major shipping lanes, holding down the cost of ocean shipping and reducing their cost per container. But the gigantification of container ships and tanker vessels, as well as more particular stability problems of car carrier designs, need to be addressed from an insurance risk perspective, says Dieter Berg, president, International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI). In this Insurance Institute of London Lecture, Peter Townsend, Head of London Marine at Swiss Re cautioned how these new bigger ships were bringing new concerns to the insurance industry.
