Nashville-based Ingram Marine Group, one of the largest barging companies in the U.S., announced Monday that David O’Loughlin will retire from his role as CEO. He will be succeeded by John Roberts, the company’s current chief operating officer, who will take the helm as the new president and CEO on February 1. O’Loughlin will stay with the company as vice chair for the remainder of 2022 to assist with the transition. “Dave has been invaluable to our company and our people,” said Ingram Barge Company chairman Orrin H. Brunswick Commercial & Government Products (BCGP) has announced Erik Bon Fleur as its new general manager. Caterpillar Inc. will begin its global, external search for a new chief financial officer after it announced that group president and CFO Brad Halverson has elected to retire in early 2018, concluding a career spanning more than three decades with the company. Halverson will continue working into early 2018 and will help ensure a smooth transition for the new CFO. Prior to becoming CFO, Halverson served two years as vice president of the Finance Services Division, and before that position, he was the corporate controller. Halverson joined Caterpillar in 1988 as an accountant.

The College of Business Administration at Nicholls State University began offering students the option of maritime management as a degree concentration in the fall of 2013. In continuing Nicholls’ efforts to attract and serve new student groups, the maritime courses are also being offered to non-degree seeking individuals as part of a certificate program. According to Dr. Chadwick, director of the program, “We seek to accommodate both traditional students and those who are seeking to gain knowledge of the field, but not necessarily pursue a degree. This might include, but is not limited to, employees of maritime or maritime-related companies. In addition, a minor in Maritime Administration was approved this December.

The State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College has selected Dr. Richard Burke and Dr. Christopher Clott as its inaugural ABS chairs following a comprehensive search that drew an expansive range of applicants, the college announced today. Made possible through the financial support of ABS (formerly the American Bureau of Shipping), which provided an endowment of $3 million dollars, the positions aim to allow SUNY Maritime to remain “first and foremost” in the maritime education and training field.

Faststream today named Chad Fuhrmann the recipient of its inaugural Scholarship for Leadership Excellence. The scholarship, valued at $9,500, will afford Fuhrmann the opportunity to attend a continuing education program hosted by Louisiana State University’s E.J. Ourso College of Business Stephenson Entrepreneurship Institute. Fuhrmann is the business director for the Americas at Maritime Assurance and Consulting, Ltd. (MAC), where he is responsible for all U.S. operations. He previously held leadership roles at DNV GL, GL Noble Denton, and Oceaneering International.

The Port of Long Beach announced Tuesday, May 13, the award of education scholarships totaling $43,500 to 28 local high school and college students. At the same time, the Port introduced an expanded Education Outreach Plan at the “Celebrating Education Reception” held at the Museum of Latin American Art. The Education Outreach Plan, which was approved by the Board of Harbor Commissioners on Monday, May 12, will dedicate $150,000 in seed money for three key initiatives: a new online education portal, a maritime career exploration fair in the fall and a teacher externship program in summer 2015.

Employers are hiring in coastal Louisiana, especially as offshore drilling picks up in the Gulf of Mexico. Companies are concerned about finding enough skilled workers in a locally tight labor market. For mariners, a variety of training programs at different levels and costs are offered in south Louisiana. For those businesses without the significant wherewithal and training resources of a Kirby Corporation, for example, there are other viable options for training. Fletcher Technical Community College: The college’s Louisiana Marine and Petroleum Institute or LaMPI was founded in the late 1970s to provide local maritime training. The institute provides Coast Guard-approved courses to about 2,200 mariners a year now. Fletcher and LaMPI are located in Houma on the Louisiana Gulf.
