KR On Ammonia as Alt Marine Fuel

The Korean Register of Shipping (KR) has published important technical information on the use of ammonia as an alternative marine fuel, comparing it to other different types of carbon-neutral alternative fuels.The classification society founded in South Korea revealed in a press note that the highly topical, free guide covers the fuel's key features, industry trends and relevant technologies. Detailed guidelines and analysis examines the future outlook for ammonia, providing much needed practical information at a time when IMO compliant fuel sources are in high demand.The IMO aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 40 percent by 2030, and 70 percent by 2050, which reduces the viability of fossil fuels as compliance solutions in the long term.

ADNOC, Inpex in LNG Bunkering Pact

Seattle based Foss Maritime, owner and operator of a fleet of tugs offering maritime transportation and logistics services, has awarded a contract to classification society ABS to support compliance with U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Subchapter M requirements. New Bunker Supplier Eyes Houston/Galveston Market

GCC Bunkers said it seeks to establish itself as a leader in developing compliance solutions for the IMO global sulfur cap in 2020 and is operated by principals Mark VandeVoorde and John Mafrige. Longer term, GCC is actively evaluating several processing or manufacturing opportunities for post 2020 bunker fuels to be produced in Texas. The Company has secured working capital funding from a Texas-based private equity group and has entered into agreements for physical marine fuels storage at Texas International Terminals in Galveston, beginning July, 2017.

New Fuel Regs Drive Scrubber Business

The Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems Association and its members are preparing to meet higher demand for gas scrubbing systems to bring SOx emissions in line with the targets set by the IMO’s 2020 fuel sulfur content proposals. As previously reported by this correspondent in Maritime Reporter and Engineering News (December 2016 issue, page 24; January 2017 issue, page 28), the IMO has come in for some severe criticism over its proposals to introduce a global marine fuels sulfur content cap of 0.5 percent (mass/mass) by the year 2020.
