ABS Issues AIP for Containerized LNG System

ABS has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) to TECHNOLOG for a liquified natural gas (LNG) fuel gas container system.The portable tank system, which will ultimately come in 20- and 40-foot containers, is designed to be filled at land-based LNG terminals and shipped to vessels via rail, road or cargo ship before being loaded onboard an LNG-fueled vessel. Maersk CEO Offers Advice for Market Growth

AP Moller-Maersk CEO, Nils Andersen, delivered the keynote at today’s Danish Maritime Days forum in Copenhagen where he offered several keys to enhancing the maritime sector on a worldwide scale. Andersen called the ship purchasing market attractive for investors, but said the industry is relatively unattractive when comparing its returns to those of other global markets. Though Maersk expects container volume growth near 4.5% per year, Andersen explained that these figures will not be achieved by adding ships to an already overcrowded market.

Maersk Ship Plastic Balls as Fruit

Maersk Container Industry (MCI) purchased 116,000 plastic balls for a trial to test & increase the effectiveness of its refrigerated containers in delivering fresh produce. The balls were adapted so they would respire in much the same way as fresh fruit and vegetables do, enabling MCI to assess various improvements to its reefer box service. MCI's container technology manager Lars Lübker explains why the company opted to run such a large trial: "The challenge by transporting fruits and vegetables is that they respire. They are living organisms and they need to be taken special care of. "In order to improve the performance of a container we had to develop a specific artificial fruit. We did that by purchasing 116,000 plastic balls.

Germanischer Lloyd Restructures Maritime Services

Germanischer Lloyd has restructured its Maritime Services. the classification society has optimized its workflows. 2007, the Maritime Services will be subdivided into the divisions Fleet in Service, Ship Newbuilding, Maritime Systems and Components and Innovation and Strategic Research. Consisting of a number of competence centers and departments, each division has been assigned to a client group: shipowners, shipyards and supply industry. The aim is to provide the customers with individual technical support. Peter Leveringhaus, a graduate engineer, has been appointed manager of the new division Maritime Systems and Components. Leveringhaus is a graduate in mechanical engineering and a qualified electrician. He has acquired professional experience as department head and sales manager.
