Dutch shipbuilding conglomerate Damen Shipyards Group announced it has signed a contract with BOA Group for two ASD Tugs 3010 ICE. Due to Damen’s practice of constructing vessels in series for stock, the tugs were already under construction at the time of order and will be delivered later this year.BOA’s fleet consists of specialized offshore vessels, semi-submersible barges and harbor tugs. Effective November 1, 2021, Jeroen Heesters will be the new Managing Director of Damen Shiprepair & Conversion, one of the seven divisions of the Damen Shipyards Group. With Finance Director Eric Snoeren, who joined the division on 1 October, he will make up the management team.After graduating in mechanical engineering, Heesters worked in the oil and gas industry. As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability, Damen Shipyards Group is having solar panels installed at a number of its Dutch yards. Collectively, the installations will provide approximately 12 MW clean electricity per year.Project manager, Gerard Kornet, of Damen explains, “At Damen, we always take a long-term view. Dutch shipyard Damen has confirmed the successful sale of its 70-meter support vessel, Game Changer. The yacht will now return to Gorinchem in the Netherlands for further customisation. Game Changer  is Damen's fourth Yacht Support vessel sold in the 70-metre segment, proving the ongoing demand for large yachting solutions for worldwide adventures, helicopter and dive operations. Damen has a total of 12 Damen Yacht Support vessels delivered or in build. The next available Yacht Support vessel is a 55-metre YS 5009 Adventure, which will be delivered before the summer this year. “It’s exciting to see how these clients are using Damen vessels to realise their vision of yachting,” notes Rose Damen, Commercial Director.

Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam (DSR), part of Damen Shiprepair & Conversion, said it has completed maintenance and repair works on the newest member of CMV’s fleet, the cruise ship Columbus. The full work scope was concluded within a tight timescale, thus ensuring that the vessel could sail to the London Cruise Terminal in Tilbury, U.K. in time for her naming ceremony and inaugural cruise. Several CMV vessels – the Astor, Marco Polo and the Magellan, for example – have made calls at various Damen repair yards in the past.

With its latest newbuild order, Kotug Smit Towage will bring the total number of Damen-built tugs operating in its fleet of 69 to 22. The European harbor towage services provider has ordered a trio from Damen Shipyards Group, including two 80 metric ton bollard pull ASD Tugs 2913 (including one with firefighting capabilities) and a 70 metric ton bollard pull ATD Tug 2412 Twin Fin. Kotug Smit Towage CEO, René Raaijmakers, said the three new tugs will support the company’s growth in the U.K.

Damen Green Solutions (DGS) in partnership with Damen Shiprepair & Conversion (DSC) and AEC, the scrubber supplier, is trialling a new technique for retrofitting scrubbers. Designated the Modular Approach, this new process is designed to cut the time that a vessel typically needs to spend in dock from two or more weeks to just a few days. This dramatic reduction in downtime, in combination with a more cost-efficient, certified scrubber, will be welcomed by ship owners and operators. The first installation of this type is already underway for the RoRo cargo vessel Stena Scotia.

Damen Shipyards Group said it has entered into an agreement with Keppel Offshore & Marine to acquire the Keppel Verolme shipyard in the Rotterdam Botlek area, in a move that further increases its activities within the regional ship repair and conversion market. Damen said it intends to continue activities in the Botlek area of the Port of Rotterdam with the yard's current employees. The Verolme yard has been active in the Botlek area since 1957 with three graving docks, a quay capacity of over 1,800 meters and approximately 250 employees. With the largest dock measuring 90 x 405 meters, Damen will gain capacity to cater for the largest maritime objects. Currently, Damen’s biggest dock in the Netherlands is located at Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam and measures 46 x 307 meters.

Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen (DSV), part of Damen Shiprepair & Conversion (DSC), has said farewell to Marco Polo, the 800 passenger cruise ship owned by Global Maritime and operated by Cruise & Maritime Voyages. Launched in 1964 as the Aleksandr Pushkin, she was in for her 10th special survey and general maintenance and refurbishment. The project took around five weeks to complete. An elegant vessel whose design harks back to an earlier era, the Marco Polo had a full schedule of works during her time at DSV.

A number of Damen Shiprepair & Conversion yards have recently or will soon achieve new ISO certifications as part of an ongoing initiative to standardize operating procedures across the group. Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam (DSAm) and Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen (DSVl) have passed ISO 3834-2 certificate audits. This standard defines rigorous quality procedures for the fusion welding of metallic materials and represents the highest possible accolade in the welding industry. Damen Shiprepair & Conversion (DSC) plans to lay off around 150 workers as part of its reorganisation program at three Dutch yards within its group. All employees at the three locations — Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam (DSR), Damen Shiprepair Van Brink (DSVB) and Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen (DSVl) — have been informed, along with the workers' council and trade unions. It is the intention of DSC to complete the reorganization before summer 2017. Making matters worse, market expectations for the short and medium term are not positive. DSC says it is reducing the number of permanent staff throughout all levels of the organization as well as reducing facility costs.

After four months of preliminary work alongside, FPSO Petrojarl I moved on April 16, 2015 into Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam’s 307m long x 47 m wide dry dock no 8 for work to the hull. In all, the vessel will spend a year at DSR before heading off to the South Atlantic. The Teekay managed FPSO arrived at Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam in January 2015. DSR was awarded an EPC contract by Teekay Petrojarl LLC for the upgrade, on completion of which the vessel will be redeployed at the Atlanta field in Brazil.

Van Oord’s flexible fallpipe vessel, Stornes, has recently been in Damen Shiprepair & Conversion Rotterdam for a scope of work which allows the vessel to operate at greater water depths in future. Stornes is a 175 m long, 26.24 m wide, DP2 vessel used for subsea rock installation to protect piping. Since her delivery to Van Oord in 2011, Stornes has mostly been installing rocks to water depths up to 800 metres. However, a contract awarded to the company in 2013 required the vessel to operate at 1,300 metres. After some minor modifications in 2014, the first phase of the contract was executed. Now, the vessel has received an upgrade to her rock-dumping tower, which enables an even better performance at these water depths.

In collaboration with Caterpillar / MaK, Bolier has converted an existing 6M43C engine to a 6M46 Dual Fuel onboard the Coral Anthelia. The project was commissioned by Anthony Veder. In 2012 and 2013, Anthony Veder built four new ethylene carriers fitted with MaK 6M43C propulsion engines. The fourth carrier was already in an advanced stage when the decision was made to convert the existing engine to a dual fuel engine. According to Bolier’s customer support manager, Frans Jührend, this is the first upgrade in the world to use this new technique.

A three-week repair project on the Jumbo Javelin, a DP2 Heavy Lift Crane Vessel owned and operated by Jumbo, has been completed Damen Shiprepair Van Brink Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The major aspect of the repair was the replacement of the frames of 15 box coolers. To minimize the time spent in dock, 12 of these were prefabricated prior to the Jumbo Javelin arriving at Van Brink, and the remaining three were built during the docking period. The majority of the steel work was performed by Damen Group company and steel specialist Niron Staal Amsterdam.

Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam (DSR), part of Damen Shiprepair & Conversion (DSC), has been awarded an EPC contract by Petrojarl I LLC for the upgrade of its FPSO Petrojarl I. The Petrojarl I is a Teekay Petrojarl managed FPSO built in 1986 which has been active in the North Sea. Its redeployment will be at the Atlanta field in Brazil. The Petrojarl I is contracted by Queiroz Galvão Exploração e Produção (QGEP) for deployment at the Atlanta post-salt oil field in the Santos Basin offshore Brazil to produce heavy crude oil in a water depth of 1,535m.

To convert its vessel Coral Anthelia to dual fuel operation, Anthony Veder worked with Cat dealer Bolier to complete the industry’s first in-hull retrofit – saving considerable time and money in the process. The project saw the retrofit of a marine diesel engine to dual fuel operation in the hull of a ship without altering the vessel’s structure, limiting any onboard operations or requiring the ship to dock. Gas shipping company Anthony Veder partnered with a team of Dutch partners, including Cat dealer Bolier, to accomplish this industry-first feat – all within less than five weeks.

The Saga Cruises-owned Saga Sapphire left Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam December 19 after receiving repair and refurbishment works as well as a scheduled Class Survey. The 199.63-meter vessel is now back in action, picking up passengers from Dover before heading for the Canary Islands. After having performed the life-time extension works on the Stanislav Yudin (owned and operated by Seaway Heavy Lifting) in 2013-2014 at Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam (DSR), part of Damen Shiprepair & Conversion, the yard has been awarded a new contract by Technip for the drydocking, upgrades and operational modifications to the deepwater rigid pipe S-lay and heavy lift vessel, the Global 1200. The vessel arrived at the yard in January 2015. The Global 1200 is the first of two deepwater rigid pipe S-lay and heavy lift vessels owned by Technip.
