Maritime Museum Christens San Salvador Replica

The Spanish ship San Salvador is the embodiment of California’s origin story. The ship’s voyage in 1542, with Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo at the helm, established California as one of the places in America’s landscape where we can say our country truly began. Nearly 500 years later, the Maritime Museum of San Diego has launched a full-sized, fully functional replica of the original galleon. The San Salvador was successfully lowered into the Pacific Ocean by Marine Group Boat Works of Chula Vista.

MCC Looking into San Diego Terminal Development

As part of strategic efforts to increase cargo business at the Port of San Diego, the port has entered into a conditional agreement with Mitsubishi Cement Corporation (MCC), one of the largest cement companies in California, for potential future operations at Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal. The conditional agreement, which was approved by the Board of Port Commissioners on June 11, 2015, will allow the port to conduct a project review under the California Environmental Quality Act in anticipation of MCC's potential operations at the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal on San Diego Bay.

Port of San Diego Chooses First Female CEO

Randa Coniglio has been named president and CEO of the San Diego Unified Port District. After a nationwide search for a new president and CEO, the Port decided Monday to stay in-house and name Coniglio to the post. Coniglio, who would be the port's first female CEO in its 52-year history, will replace interim chief John Bolduc, the agency's police chief, who took over last year when Wayne Darbeau was fired over a scandal involving a summer job for his son with a port tenant. Port of San Diego Generates $7.6b Regional Impact

The Port of San Diego plays a critical role in San Diego County's economic rebound by pumping more than $7.6 billion a year into the region from employment, sales and purchases of goods and services, according to a recent report. "The data confirms the Port of San Diego is a powerful regional economic engine with substantial benefits reaching far and wide," said Board of Port Commissioners Chairman Dan Malcolm. The report is based on 2013 data, the most recent year for which data is available.

USCG Commandant Visits Port of San Diego

Admiral Paul Zukunft, Commandant of the United States Coast Guard, visited the Port of San Diego’s administrative offices on February 12. The Commandant was in town to participate in the 2015 Armed Forces Communications & Electronics Association /U.S. Naval Institute Conference held at the San Diego Convention Center. During his visit to the port, the Commandant participated in a briefing that included Dan Malcolm, Chairman of the Board of Port Commissioners; Acting President and CEO John Bolduc; Acting Chief of Harbor Police Mark Stainbrook and other senior Port staff members.
