Sembmarine Builds Zero-emissions RoPax Ferry for Norled

Sembcorp Marine announced it has completed fabrication of the first of three identical battery-operated roll-on/roll-off passenger (RoPax) ferries for Norwegian ferry operator Norled.The newly built Hella will be launched into operation for Norled’s shortsea Hella-Vangsnes-Dragsvik connections in Norway.Designed by Sembcorp Marine subsidiary LMG Marin, the vessels incorporate energy-efficient solutions throughout, including quick connection shore charging plugs; auto-mooring; auto-cross; efficient hull, propulsion and heat recovery systems; as well as minimized hotel and auxiliary loads.

Caterpillar to Power Edda Wind's New Vessels

Caterpillar Marine said it has been selected to be the power solutions provider for Edda Wind’s four new commissioning service operation vessels (CSOV) being built at Astilleros Gondán and two new service operation vessels (SOV) to be built at Astilleros Balenciaga shipyards in Spain. The series of vessels six will be delivered in 2022-2024.Of the six confirmed units, the first four in the series have been contracted to work on offshore wind farms under long-term agreements with Ørsted, Vestas and Ocean Breeze.

Maersk to Cut Carbon Emissions to Zero by 2050

Sembcorp Marine Bags Offshore Wind and Ferry Projects

Wärtsilä Launches Fuel-Saving Pre-Swirl Stator

EnergoFlow is a new energy saving solution that will return ship operators’ investment in less than two years, according to its developer Wärtsilä. By reducing the power losses which occur in the propeller’s slipstream with an optimised inflow, Wärtsilä’s solution improves fuel efficiency by up to 10 percent. The technology group Wärtsilä launches the newest solution in its propulsion efficiency portfolio during November. The product will be introduced at the Europort event in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, on Tuesday, November 7. The next-generation pre-swirl stator is the result of years of research and experimentation with hydrodynamics, energy-saving propulsion efficiency concepts and pre-swirl models by Wärtsilä’s R&D experts.

WE Tech Expands Into Australia

Fincantieri Orders Heat Power Systems for Cruise Newbuilds

Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri has selected Climeon’s heat power system Climeon Ocean for its energy efficient solutions, purchasing six Climeon Ocean 450M systems to be installed in its upcoming new cruise ship builds. The Switch's PM Shaft Generator for LNG Vessel

The Switch, a specialist of megawatt-class permanent magnet (PM) machines for advanced marine drive trains, has been selected to deliver its PM shaft generator for an LNG carrier with a 45,000 cubic meter cargo capacity, allowing the vessel to gain greater efficiency over its entire speed range. This order is part of a complete energy efficiency system being delivered by WE Tech Solutions (WE Tech) of Finland to Saga LNG Shipping Pte. Ltd. The vessel will be built by China Merchants Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. Earlier this year, The Switch received a PM shaft generator order with an option of one more from the energy-efficient solution provider WE Tech for an LNG carrier owned by Saga LNG Shipping Pte. Ltd. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in October 2016.

First Certified Sustainable Shipping Loan

United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) has launched a North Europe - US East Coast (NEU1) service as well as an order of 3,500 reefer containers as part of its ongoing expansion phase. The new NEU1 service has been added as part of UASC's strategic international network to provide customers with global transportation access and reach. It consists of a weekly sailing making five direct port calls in Northern Europe to the principle ports of Le Havre, Antwerp, Rotterdam, Southampton and Bremerhaven. On the US East Coast, four further port calls will be made each week to the largest ports of New York, Norfolk, Charleston and Savannah. Following the recent delivery of 2,000 new reefer units, UASC announced an additional order of 3,500 reefer containers with reefer technology provided by Daikin.

UASC Places Order of 3500 Reefer Containers

United Arab Shipping Company (UASC), a leading container shipping line and emerging global carrier, has ordered another 3,500 reefer containers, after ordering 2,000 units from Japan’s Daikin Industries in January, says a report in JOC. The order marks the second milestone in the expansion of UASC’s reefer services and reiterates the company’s ongoing investment in the most cutting-edge, energy-efficient solutions for the carriage of frozen and chilled cargoes. According to a press statement,  Gareth Madsen, Head of Reefer Management at UASC said, “In terms of quality, performance and reliability, our latest reefer order comprises one of the industry’s most eco-efficient and reliable units.

Wärtsilä Propulsion for LNG Bunker Vessel

A new 5,800-cubic-meter LNG bunker and feeder vessel, being built for Sirius Veder Gas AB at Royal Bodewes, Hoogezand, in the Netherlands, will be powered by a Wärtsilä propulsion solution. Wärtsilä, who received the contract in September, will supply a propulsion package comprising a six-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel main engine capable of running on either LNG or diesel, a reduction gearbox with power take-off (PTO), a shaft line suitable for use with environmentally friendly lubricants and equipped with a Wärtsilä Airguard aft seal that allows zero emissions, and a Wärtsilä controllable pitch propeller. The latest Wärtsilä 34DF engine version features high power output and reduced fuel consumption in both gas and diesel modes, according to the manufacturer.
