Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has signed a shipbuilding contract for 16 16,000 TEU methanol-powered container ships from a shipowner in Asia.Evergreen Shipping’s subsidiary Evergreen Marine (Asia) has placed an order with SHI for 16 vessels and a separate order for eight 16,000 TEU with Japan’s Nihon Shipyard.The order amount was KRW 3,959.3 billion ($3.1 billion), the largest ever for a single ship contract, says SHI. MRS is an annual international event focused on risks involving the global maritime transportation system (MTS). Last month, CMA CGM’s Zephyr became the largest containership by cargo capacity to ever transit the Panama Canal.The Neopanamax containership Zephyr has a total capacity of 16,285 TEUs. After calling at the U.S. ports of New York and Savannah, the Zephyr sailed back southbound through the Canal, from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, in route to Qingdao, China. On July 1, the vessel completed its return trip through the Expanded Canal’s Neopanamax Locks, which opened six years ago to accommodate the world’s growing fleet of large containerships.

The Panama Ship Registry has added Ever Alot to its fleet, touted as the world’s biggest container ship and the first to break the 24,004 TEU mark. Panama has 18 of the world’s 20 largest container ships in terms of TEUs.The vessel is mammoth at 400 x 61.5 m, launched at the end of June and surpassing the Ever Ace as the world's largest container ship.  Like the other vessels, Ever Act, Ever Aim and Ever Alp, which have a slightly smaller capacity of 23,992 TEUs, it belongs to Evergreen's "A" Class, sailing mainly between Europe and Asia.
