According to a Feb. 1 report from the Los Angeles Times, there will be no new ship-building and repair yard at the Port of Los Angeles at this time. The City Council voted to scuttle a $50m proposal by Gambol Industries to revive the former site of the Southwest Marine yard. The shipyard project was to create more than 1,000 jobs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners argued that the shipbuilding idea would interfere with a more urgent priority -- deepening the main channel at the port to accommodate a new generation of super-sized container vessels and keep the port globally competitive. According to a report from www.dailybreeze.com, a proposal to build a $50m ship building and repair business at the Port of Los Angeles was sunk Thursday by the Board of Harbor Commissioners. The commission terminated its exclusive negotiations with Long Beach-based Gambol Industries, which has heavily campaigned to open a shipyard on the site of the shuttered Southwest Marine slips at Terminal Island.
