Hapag-Lloyd and Seaspan Corporation announced plans to retrofit and convert five 10,100 TEU containerships powered by conventional MAN S90 engines to dual-fuel engines capable of operating on methanol. Following the engine retrofit, the vessels will continue to be on long-term charter from Seaspan to Hapag-Lloyd.The vessels scheduled for retrofits are the Seaspan Amazon, Seaspan Ganges, Seaspan Thames, Seaspan Yangtze and Seaspan Zambezi. The retrofit is expected to take approximately 80-90 days per vessel starting in the first quarter of 2026.

The Government of India opened its second multi-modal terminal (MMT) yesterday, September 12, 2019. Located on the River Ganges at Sahibganj in Jharkhand State, the new terminal is now ready for business following the completion of a two-year construction project managed by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). HullWiper, GAC EnvironHull’s diver-free hull cleaning technology, has completed its 100th clean for Maersk Line. The clean was conducted on the Maersk Ganges in the Jebel Ali Container Terminal, Dubai. The HullWiper Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective hull cleaning solution that employs unique brushless cleaning technology. It uses high-pressure seawater to avoid damage to the antifouling surface on the hull. Debris is collected in a special waste filter unit and disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. It also removes the need to employ divers, reducing operational costs and the risk to human life.

Düsseldorf, Germany, 14 June 2016 – Terex Port Solutions (TPS) is continuing its success in India with its diesel-electric Terex Gottwald mobile harbour cranes. IRC Natural Resources Pvt. Ltd., which is part of the IRC Group (IRC), has ordered two Model 4 mobile harbour cranes in the G HMK 4406 B 4-rope grab variant for its contract at Berth No. 13, Haldia Dock Complex, located to the south of Kolkata on the Ganges estuary. In August 2016, the cranes will be transported, completely erected, by heavy-load vessel to India, where they will handle coal, coke, manganese ore and limestone from October onwards. The two identical machines have a 40-t grab curve and a maximum lifting capacity of 100 t.

Indian shipbuilders buoyed by a renewed political will, a plan and funding to help the industry recover. It has been a long wait for the 28 shipbuilders in India to finally catch sight of  opportunities to sail back into the better financial waters. The newly elected Narendra Modi’s BJP’s party brought in a strong stable government, the first in nearly 30 years, and has given an unprecedented, massive boost in promoting Indian shipping in its recent Union Budget. Most industry stakeholders consider this to be a very positive and unexpected turn of events, as the previous succession of governments that have been largely unsupportive of all matters maritime, despite the industry crying itself hoarse for a level playing field to enable it to face cut-throat overseas competition.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Japan on Saturday seeking to capitalise on his affinity with Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe to strengthen security and business ties on his first major foreign visit since his landslide election victory in May. Modi is one of only three people that Abe follows on Twitter, while the Indian leader admires the Japanese premier's brand of nationalist politics. "We will explore how Japan can associate itself productively with my vision of inclusive development in India," Modi said before departing on Saturday for the five-day visit. He listed manufacturing, infrastructure and energy as key areas for cooperation. In his previous role as chief minister of India's fast-growing western state of Gujarat Modi had actively courted Japanese investment.

IHC Merwede name and launch the 5,500m³ trailing suction hopper dredger, DCI DREDGE XXI, for the Dredging Corporation of India Ltd (DCI)  at the shipyard in Kinderdijk, The Netherlands. The ceremony was performed by Mrs R Mohanty, the spouse of DCI Chairman and Managing Director Captain DK Mohanty. The DCI DREDGE XXI is the third vessel in a series of three dredgers – including the DCI DREDGE XIX and DCI DREDGE XX – and is being constructed under the dual classes of Lloyd's Register and Indian Register of Shipping.

On Thursday 15 November, the delivery of the 5,500m³ trailing suction hopper dredger, DCI Dredge XIX, took place at Waalhaven in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The dredger was received by the Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) Manager Mr YSR Murthy three weeks ahead of the contractual delivery date. IHC Merwede’s contract with DCI is for the design, engineering and delivery of the vessel. The company was selected due to its efficiency and reliability in delivering previous orders on time.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) scientists have found that carbon is stored in the soils and sediments of the Ganges-Brahmaputra basin for a surprisingly long time, making it likely that global warming could destabilize the pool of carbon there and in similar places on Earth, potentially increasing the rate of CO2 release into the atmosphere. The study, published in the current online edition of Nature Geoscience, examined the radiocarbon content of river sediments collected from the Ganges-Brahmaputra system draining the Himalayas. Using radiocarbon dating, WHOI researchers Valier Galy and Timothy Eglinton found that organic carbon resides in the basin for anywhere from 500 to 17,000 years.

Heidmar Inc. and W-O Shipping Group B.V. have agreed on terms for the formation of a joint venture, WOMAR Holdings LLC, to commercially manage small and intermediate size IMO II/Chemical and other tankers less than 30,000 DWT. Heidmar's Marida Tanker pool and W-O Shipping's Yamuna and Ganges pools will become part of the joint venture and will be managed by WOMAR from offices in Singapore and London.  The intent of the joint venture is to provide tanker owners in this market segment with worldwide market coverage and it will initially have a combined fleet of over thirty tankers ranging in size from 3,750DWT to 16,700DWT.
