Even as shipowners enjoy record low bunker fuel pricing, the search for hull cleaning and fuel-saving optimization continues. Jotun, which recently launched 'hull skater' hull grooming, found a willing partner in Wallenius Wilhelmsen -- an operator of a fleet of 126 RoRo vessels, 11 marine terminals and 71 processing centers globally -- to put the hull skater to the test.For the past decade, Wallenius Wilhelmsen has produced an annual Sustainability Report, describing initiatives undertaken to reduce the company’s emissions and safeguard life below the water line, among other target areas.

HullPIC conference Showcases Solutions

To spur development and raise awareness for hull performance monitoring, DNV GL and paint manufacturer Jotun are inviting industry stakeholders to the second Hull Performance & Insight Conference (HullPIC). Hull performance monitoring solutions offer significant fuel savings potential and have prompted growing interest from the maritime industry. This year, the HullPIC conference will take place in Castle Ulrichshusen, in Germany, from 27 to 29 March. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has now published the long-awaited ISO 19030, a new standard conceived to measure changes in ship-specific hull and propeller performance. According to Jotun, which has led the industry in the standard’s development, the move has the potential to reduce the industry’s green house gas emissions by 10%, while saving operators up to USD 30 billion in annual energy costs. ISO 19030 has been more than three years in the making. It’s seen a collaboration of 53 expert stakeholders from throughout the industry working together to develop a uniform framework for measuring the efficacy of solutions improving hull and propeller performance.

Jotun has analyzed the first ever five year dry-docking of a vessel treated with its Hull Performance Solutions (HPS) system. The data revealed that Gearbulk’s Penguin Arrow, coated with Jotun’s SeaQuantum X200 in September 2010, recorded a staggering estimated fuel saving and CO2 emission reduction of $1.5 million and 12,055 metric tons respectively, across the 60-month period. Jotun’s proprietary HPS offer combines the application of an advanced antifouling coating, a specialized application procedure, a full suite of sensors that record hull performance and a high performance guarantee.

Jotun to Update Performance Guarantees

The 17 National Standardization Bodies represented on ISO’s Marine Environment Protection Sub-committee (ISO-TC8-SC2) has voted in favor of circulating ISO 19030 parts 1 and 2 as Draft International Standards. In anticipation of final approval of the standard expected next year, Jotun informs it will update Performance Guarantees offered as a part of its Hull Performance Solutions so that they are fully compliant with the standard. According to Geir Axel Oftedahl, Jotun’s Business Development Director, Hull Performance Solutions, the purpose of establishing these standards is to prescribe practical methods for measuring changes in ship-specific hull and propeller performance and to define performance indicators for hull and propeller maintenance, repair and retrofit activities.

One Step Closer to Hull and Propeller Measurement Standards

Jotun released a statement welcoming action taken by the International Standards Organization to mobilize an expert group to start work on a common industry standard for measurement of changes in hull and propeller performance. Jotun, in cooperation with the Bellona Foundation (Bellona) and Standard Norway, has been successful in mobilizing shipping industry stakeholders in an effort to reach general agreement on a method for measuring changes in hull and propeller performance, the company said. By improving hull and propeller performance, the world fleet can reduce fuel cost by as much as $30 billion per year and achieve an estimated 0.3% reduction in manmade GHG emissions.
