TSMS Transition Program Debuts at SUNY Towing Forum

Baker, Lyman & Co. will offer UTV operators a unique opportunity to review the TSMS Transition Program though an hour long interactive presentation during the October 17, 2012 Towing Forum at SUNY Maritime. TSMS, or Towing Safety Management System, is the result of the long awaited Sub-Chapter M Rules by which towing vessels become subject to USCG safety management inspection. The TSMS Transition Program allows Sub-Chapter M impacted operators to enroll into a regulatorily certified Towing Safety Management System prior to the Sub-Chapter M Final Rule.

GL: Five Stars for Ernst Russ

The shipping company Ernst Russ strives continuously for the highest quality, safety and environmental standards in shipping; in recognition of this it has now been awarded the "GL Excellence - 5 Stars" certificate by classification society Germanischer Lloyd (GL). Ernst Russ Managing Director Mr Stefan Bülow and Mr Jan Stahmer, Health, Safety, Environment und Quality Manager, were presented with the firm's certificate by GL this week, making the Hamburg shipping company only the ninth ship-owner in the world to receive this prestigious award.

GL Garrad Hassan and GL Academy to Offer Joint Training Program

GL Garrad Hassan and GL Academy are merging their expertise to offer joint training seminars. With GL Garrad Hassan’s skilled trainers working within the GL Academy infrastructure and through GL Academy’s local branch offices, these combined training programs will be offered worldwide. The development of future seminars for the renewables community will also be supported by GL Academy’s knowledge of training organization and teaching techniques. Andrew Brown, who manages GL Garrad Hassan’s training courses, will be a part of the global GL Academy team and takes on the role of Product Manager for Renewables responsible for the marketing, preparation and organisation of the seminars.

Collaboration on Advanced Maritime Training

A collaboration on advanced maritime training has been agreed on between Anglo-Eastern Maritime Training Centre (AEMTC) and GL Academy. The Principal of AEMTC, Capt. K.N. Deboo, Dr Hermann J. Klein, Member of the Executive Board Germanischer Lloyd, K. Seal, Risk Manager of AEMTC, and Dr Volkmar Wasmansdorff, Executive Vice President and Director Region Asia/Pacific with GL, signed the agreement. The first GL Academy course on "Ship Structures II" will be held in February. Further topics are scheduled for 2009. The cooperation marks the beginning of an extensive collaboration to work jointly on a post-graduate diploma course in naval architecture. Additionally, value-added seminars and workshops for the maritime industry will be provided.

Vietnam Maritime University and GL Sign Cooperation Agreement

An collaboration on engineering training, including practical training courses, has been agreed between classification society Germanischer Lloyd and Vietnam Maritime University (VIMARU). The cooperation was signed during VietShip 2008 trade fair by DSc. Dang Van Uy, Headmaster of VIMARU, Dr. at GL, and Hans-Ulrich Schulze, Director of GL Academy. Germanischer Lloyd will provide two awards for outstanding academic performance to two best students of the VIMARU, a Naval Architect and a Marine Engineer, each year during the Graduation Ceremony. 500th Ship Receives ERS Classification

The Histria Perla is the 500th ship to receive ERS classification. The Emergency Response Service (ERS) of Germanischer Lloyd has taken on its 500th ship: The Histria Perla, a chemicals tanker with a tonnage of 40,471 dwt was built in 2005 at the Constantza Shipyard in Romania and classed by Germanischer Lloyd. Nicolae Berechet, Technical Director of Histria Ship Management, received the 500th ERS certificate at the company's headquarters in Constanta, Romania. Accidents, collisions, oil spillages, groundings, on-board fires - the Emergency Response Service has been helping ships in distress for thirteen years. The service is triggered by telephone, using a special emergency number.

GL Participates in INMARCO Conference

"Advanced Techniques in Tanker Design and Operation" is the topic of a presentation by Germanischer Lloyd experts at the INMARCO conference in Mumbai, India this week. The paper showcases safety relevant aspects in tanker building and the tools utilized by Germanischer Lloyd in the design of tankers. Such areas are sloshing, vibration, shaft alignment and crashworthiness. For example, GL uses the highly effective direct computation instead of model tests to predict the effects of sloshing. The one hour workshop "GL Academy - Discover the Maritime Knowledge World" takes place on November 24 and November 25 and presents an overview of the comprehensive maritime training programme by GL Academy. The seminars offer expert skills combined with wide-ranging practical experience.

GL at Maritime Vietnam

The entire spectrum of classification services for ship newbuilding, fleet in service and certification of materials and components is being presented by Germanischer Lloyd at the Maritime Vietnam trade fair in Ho Chi Minh City this week. Also, training courses for shipyards, technical support and consulting on rules and regulations are being showcased. The one hour workshop Managing Newbuildings and More, taking place on November 8 during the trade fair, presents an overview of the comprehensive maritime training program by GL Academy. The seminars offer expert skills combined with wide-ranging practical experience. The courses convey the experience and know-how of Germanischer Lloyd and address technical and managerial challenges of shipyards.
