Port Everglades to Commission USS Paul Ignatius

Port Everglades, located in Greater Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood, Florida,  hosted the U.S. Navy’s Commissioning Ceremony of its newest Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, the USS Paul IgnatiusLast week, the Broward County Commission voted unanimously to waive dockage charges for the ship’s call and provide a cruise terminal for the Commissioning Committee to hold weeklong events.“We are honored that the U.S. Navy recognizes that Port Everglades can meet their unique needs,” said Broward County Mayor Mark Bogen. “For 29 years, Fleet Week Port Everglades was produced as a signature annual event for South Florida, as well as the Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, and for the nation, bringing tens of thousands of visiting military personnel and guests to our community.

Port Everglades Project Step Closer

Broward County's Port Everglades is moving forward with a plan to widen and deepen its channels, but there are still several steps to go before construction begins, the Port's Chief Executive Steven Cernak told elected officials and business leaders during an event to celebrate the project's long-awaited approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In addition, Cernak announced that the Corps has committed $1.2 million for the immediate next step, which is the pre-construction engineering and design phase, estimated to cost a total of $5.6 million. "Our Congressional Delegation has taken our message to Capitol Hill with determination and perseverance, so that we can begin the design phase this fall and be ready for construction before receiving Congressional authorization," Cernak said.

Carlyle Group Acquires LMC

Global alternative asset manager The Carlyle Group today announced the acquisition of Lauderdale Marine Center (LMC), the nation's largest yacht repair facility in terms of the number of large vessels it can haul and service. Equity for the transaction comes from Carlyle Realty Partners VII, a U.S. real estate investment fund. "In partnership with the outstanding management team and staff at LMC, we will build upon LMC's success through growth and continued innovation and superb customer service," said Thad Paul, Managing Director at The Carlyle Group. Located in Fort Lauderdale on the New River, visible from I-95 and close to Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport, LMC is a 50-acre facility consisting of a boatyard, marina and marine service center.

Port Everglades Strengthens Cargo Connections

Broward County's Port Everglades has partnered with public and private entities on several multimillion-dollar landside infrastructure improvements designed to improve connections with South Florida's major highway and railroad systems. "Landside congestion plagues many seaports, but Port Everglades is fortunate to have direct interstate highway access and a strong partnership with the Florida East Coast Railway and the State of Florida that keeps commerce on the move," said Port Everglades Chief Executive and Port Director Steven M.

Technicold Facility Expansion

Technicold by Northern Lights announced its expansion to a larger facility. In late 2009, Technicold will move into an expanded, better-equipped location in the greater Fort Lauderdale, Fla. area. Technicold’s steady growth and current market positioning require more space for manufacturing of air conditioning, refrigeration and electrical load management products. The new facility will house Technicold’s corporate headquarters as well as on-site sales, engineering and manufacturing operations. Maersk Adds East Coast South America Service

Maersk Line is significantly expanding its presence at Broward County’s Port Everglades by bringing its new NASA service to/from the East Coast of South America to APM Terminals, located at the Greater Fort Lauderdale seaport. In partnership with APL and Mitsui OSK Line, Maersk’s new NASA service is projected to handle 26,000 container moves annually at Port Everglades. The first ship is scheduled to arrive October 29.
