Eastern Delivers Factory Trawler to O’Hara

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. delivered the DNV classed factory processor fishing trawler F/T Araho (Hull 175) on January 28, 2017 to the O’Hara Corporation of Rockland, Maine. She is the first U.S. flag freezer processor factory trawler constructed in over 25 years. The F/T Araho will be in service in the waters of Alaska. The O’Hara family and Eastern Shipbuilding are no strangers to each other. The F/T Araho is the sixth fishing vessel Eastern has built for the O’Hara family over the last 20 years. This factory processor fishing trawler is far more sophisticated than the prior five vessels. The O’Hara and D’Isernia families go back to the early 1990s with the F/V Enterprise a Catcher Processor Conversion delivered in 1996.

Rigmarine Provides Custom Winch Package for Caspian Sea Topside

Lifting and marine product specialist Rigmarine said it has recently supplied a bespoke winch system for a multinational oil and gas company, a key customer in the Caspian Sea region. The riser pull-in system comprises 38t and 12t winches, in addition to key components such as hydraulic power units, tensiometers and multiple sheave assemblies. The winches will be used intermittently over a five-year period for riser and cable pull-in activities. They will be fixed onto an offshore platform upon delivery but can be relocated in line with the requirements of the project.

ZPMC gives Cranes a lift at APM LA Terminal

The tallest port crane in North America was recently raised to that height by ZPMC, which raised the crane 33 feet (10.08 meters) to prepare for Ultra-Large Container Vessels calling at APM Terminal’s Pier 400. In a landmark project that kicked off July 1, 2016, ZPMC NA is upgrading 10 cranes for APM Pier 400 Terminal. When complete, the cranes will be able to service ships carrying up to 20,000 twenty-foot equivalent containers (TEUs). Prior to this crane raise, the largest vessels that could be serviced at the Port of Los Angeles were 13,000 TEUs. The scope of work also includes installing a new energy-efficient LED lighting system, forestay repairs, and repositioning of all 10 cranes.

ICS to Pursue Critical Issues at IMO's MEPC Meet

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has made a number of submissions to a critical meeting of the IMO Marine Environment Committee (MEPC) which begins in London next week (18-22 April). These address further measures to reduce the sector’s CO2 emissions, outstanding problems with the implementation of the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention, and the need for an immediate IMO decision on whether or not ships will have to use 0.5% sulphur fuel in 2020. ICS says its immediate priority is to help ensure that the new global CO2 data collection system is adopted by IMO as soon as possible. This will then facilitate the possible development of additional CO2 reduction measures.

Wärtsilä has signed a five-year maintenance agreement with Golar Management Oslo for the delivery of services to Golar LNG, which is one of the world's largest independent owners and operators of LNG tankers. Service agreement includes remote monitoring of engines, maintenance planning, advisory services as well as guaranteed access to personnel and spare parts, Wärtsilä said in a statement. Golar's thirteen LNG carriers and Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRU's are all equipped with Wärtsilä engines— 52 engines, in all. This prompted Golar LNG to turn to Wärtsilä for Asset Performance Optimization concepts and solutions. "One of Golar LNG's strategic assets is our operational excellence. The service agreement includes remote monitoring of engines, maintenance planning, advisory services, and guaranteed availability of personnel as well as spare parts. Golar LNG operates a fleet of 13 vessels, dedicated to both LNG transportation and midstream floating solutions. The company developed the world's first Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRU's) based on the conversion of existing LNG carriers. Golar's LNG carriers and FSRU's are all equipped with Wärtsilä engines, the number of engines totalling at 52.

SAM Electronics Equips New Celebrity Cruiseliner

Celebrity Cruises’ new cruiseliner, Celebrity Reflection, has been equipped with an extensive range of navigation, automation and entertainment systems from SAM Electronics and its associate L-3 companies. Built by Meyer Werft in Germany at a reported cost of $750m, the 315m 126,000-gt vessel was formally named in Miami last December. Bridge equipment includes a SAM NACOS 65-5 integrated navigation command assembly comprising five S and X-band radars serially linked to a similar number of Multipilot 1100 workstations for combined display of ARPA radar, Ecdis and conning functions as well as integrated operation of automatic steering control.

New Logistics Facility Coming to Port of New Orleans

Governor Bobby Jindal and CEO Jack Jensen of Jensen Companies announced the development of a new 500,000-square-foot logistics facility by TCI Plastics – a Jensen Companies division – at the Port of New Orleans. TCI will make a $36.5 million capital investment to build the facility at its France Road Wharf hub, and the project will create 160 new direct jobs with an average salary of more than $33,400, plus benefits. LED estimates the project will result in an additional 183 new indirect jobs, for a total of more than 340 new jobs.

USS New Orleans Conducts Sea Trials

The amphibious transport dock ship USS New Orleans (LPD 18) completed a five-day sea trials March 13 following an eight-month planned maintenance period, the U.S. Navy reported. The sea trials gave New Orleans' crew members an opportunity to test a number of shipboard systems including damage control systems, navigational equipment and the propulsion plant following a lengthy maintenance period. Avoiding the Edges of the Sea

Mariners do best when they avoid the edges of the sea – the shoals, rocks, and other hard spots. Coming into contact with the edges of the sea at other than a slow walking speed can ruin an otherwise pleasant voyage. Unfortunately, though, vessels have been making hard contact with the edges since Noah’s Ark grounded on Mount Ararat, rendering the Ark unseaworthy. For a while, it was thought that the leadline would reduce groundings, but one can’t be swinging the leadline constantly.
