DNV GL, Kongsberg and Subsea 7 Finish Remote DP Pilot

Partners DNV GL, Kongsberg Maritime and Subsea 7 have concluded the pilot testing of Kongsberg Maritime’s (KM) DP Digital Survey (KMDS) application on board the Subsea 7 vessel Seven Kestrel. The pilot tested the use of a remote digital verification tool for testing dynamic positioning (DP) systems as part of classification society DNV GL’s D-Class project. In March 2019,  DNV GL rolled out the first fleet-wide remote survey scheme for some inspections in the classification industry.

DNV GL Launches D-Class

DNV GL has launched a “D-Class” (Data Smart Classification) joint development project to develop an innovative Dynamic positioning (DP) verification approach. In a series of workshops DNV GL is seeking input from the industry regarding the goals, methods, means and deliverables of the project. Downtime, delays, and interruption of operations are common consequences of dynamic positioning verification schemes. DNV GL wants to change this by incorporating modern technology. Digitization is radically changing the way the shipping and offshore industries operate, opening up new opportunities to improve even the most advanced technologies. Dynamic positioning (DP), computer-controlled position-keeping based on mathematical modelling of sensor data, was first applied in 1961.
