ABS Joins Korean Partners on 3D Printing Project

ABS signed a memorandum of understanding to work with key stakeholders in Korea to develop and demonstrate a 3D printing system for ocean-going vessels.Using a digital library for the design process, the system aims to support rapid maintenance, repair and operations by using 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM), to manufacture parts on a vessel while at sea.ABS joins project partners Ulsan Metropolitan City, Ulsan ICT Promotion Agency, Korea Institute of Industrial Technology…

KR Publishes Report on Material Compatibility for Liquid Hydrogen Storage

Korean Register (KR) has published a report titled: Research Report of Material Compatibility for Liquid Hydrogen Storage on Marine Application. The report provides detailed technical information on materials suitable for onboard liquid hydrogen systems. For safe and efficient storage and transport of hydrogen, it must be handled in its liquid state, says KR. This necessitates a cryogenic environment. However, until now, there has been a notable lack of research infrastructure…

KSOE's New LNG Fuel Supply System Gets DNV AIP

Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) and its subsidiary Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) have received an approval in principle (AIP) from DNV for their newly developed waste heat-derived liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel supply system Hi-eGAS (Hyundai High Efficient Gas Supply System) for 300K very large crude carriers (VLCC).Currently, LNG fuel propulsion ships have used boilers to make hot steam, which has converted LNG into a gas at room temperature to supply a ship’s engine.

Kongsberg Digitial Scores South Korea Sim Center Contract Wins

Kongsberg Digital (KDI) won four successive contracts with maritime training centers, schools and universities in South Korea. In the first quarter of 2021, the delivery of K-Sim Offshore and DP simulators to the Korea Institute of Maritime and Fishery Technology (KIMFT) was followed by the handover of K-Sim Mooring simulators to the Busan Techno Park foundation, an organization dedicated to the development of mid- and long-term strategies and policies for local industries.Following this, KDI has been awarded contracts by two of Korea’s most distinguished educational establishments.

KIGAM Orders New Research Vessel

'Treasure Ship' Discovery Claim Raises Eyebrows

A South Korean company’s claims that it has discovered the wreck of a Russian warship containing $130 billion in gold “treasure” off South Korea has been met with scepticism from researchers and regulators in Seoul.Shinil Group, which was established last month, said on Tuesday it had discovered the wreck of the Dmitrii Donskoi, a Russian armored cruiser built in the 1880s and sunk in 1905 after battling Japanese warships. The company said the ship held 150 trillion won ($130 billion) in gold and it would provide evidence next week to support its claim.

North Korea Builds Largest Missile Submarine Yet

Satellite footage suggests that the North Korean regime of Kim Jong-Un has begun development of a massive new submarine capable of launching ballistic missiles further potentially threatening the US, reports the Telegraph. Images captured by commercial satellites in September show components compatible with the construction of a submarine stockpiled at the Sinpo South Shipyard, according to the 38 North web site, operated by the US-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University. "While there is no direct evidence that the program is for a boat to carry the ballistic missile currently under development, the presence of an approximately 10…

HHI’s New Weather System Helps Plan Sea Trials

A new system has been developed by South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) to help better manage sea trial schedules for vessels built at its Ulsan yard. The new Sea Weather Forecasting System, developed by HHI in collaboration with Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology (KIOST), analyzes sea weather information such as wave height, wind speed and current patterns on an hourly basis in seven offshore areas including Ulsan, Gunsan and Jeju Island to manage the shipbuilder’s sea trials schedules up to 72 hours in advance.

Gas Turbine Acceptance Test Completed for S. Korea Navy

Rolls-Royce has reached a milestone in the Republic of Korea Navy’s FFX frigate program, with the successful completion of acceptance tests for the MT30 gas turbine. The MT30, which will power the FFX Batch II frigates, is the world’s most power-dense marine gas turbine, meaning it packs in the maximum power into the smallest available space on board the ship, Rolls-Royce said. The FFX Batch II program is for eight ships, the first of which will be built by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME).

Korean Shipbuilders' Unsold Newbuilds

Korea's leading shipbuilders post declining profits in second quarter 2012, as well as a growing inventory of unsold vessels. Shipbuilders here have put unsold ships up for resale at below-market prices but are struggling to get them off the hands, reports the 'Korea Times'. In June, DSME said it was scrambling to find takers for two 320,100 deadweight tonnage (DWT) crude carriers, after Taiwan’s Today Makes Tomorrow (TMT) withdrew the orders for the ships it made for in 2007. STX Offshore and Shipbuilding has recently put up for resale three 57,000-DWT bulk carriers as Greece-based shipping company Trojan Maritime gave up its ownership prior to delivery. Each ship is up for grabs at $25 million, down 40 percent from its initial price of $40 million, according to STX.
