According to an August 26 report from www.NorthJersey.com, the Port Authority agreed to allow developer Larry Silverstein to build office towers at the World Trade Center site, with the help of more than $1b in public financing and subsidies. At the same time, state and local officials have called on the Port Authority to begin work to raise the Bayonne Bridge, noting that container ships have grown in size and need more room to pass under the span. The Port Authority has been studying ways to accommodate the larger ships once a widening of the Panama Canal is finished this decade. Last year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said raising the bridge to 215 ft, or 60 ft higher, would be the best solution.
