The U.S. Navy hospital ship Comfort departed New York harbor on Thursday, just a month after arriving to help ease the strain on overburdened city hospitals dealing with the novel coronavirus outbreak.The 1,000-bed Navy vessel, headed back to its home base in Norfolk, Virginia, never neared its capacity, even as the city quickly became the world’s epicenter for COVID-19 infections.The vessel, painted a gleaming white with red crosses, was a symbol of hope when it arrived on March 30 to cheers from the docks.

Oakland International Container Terminal (SSA), a major Port of Oakland tenant, said its $6 million conversion to hybrid yard cranes would cut greenhouse gas emissions 96 percent. “This is way better than we thought it would be,” said Ken Larson, Crane Manager for the terminal’s parent company, Seattle-based SSA Terminals. “So far, this is a very successful project.”The marine terminal, which handles 61 percent of Oakland’s cargo, is converting 13 massive cargo handlers, known as rubber tired gantry cranes, from diesel to battery-powered hybrid engines. The 90-foot-tall cranes combine to lift about 1,000 containers a day.Three yard cranes have been retrofitted and returned to service since March, the terminal reported. The remainder will be done by next June.

Houston-headquartered Oceaneering International has, through one of its wholly-owned subsidiaries, acquired the Aberdeen-based Ecosse Subsea Limited for approximately GBP 50 million (US$69 Million). Headquartered in Aberdeen, Scotland, Ecosse builds and operates seabed preparation, route clearance and trenching tools for submarine cables and pipelines on an integrated basis that includes vessels, ROVs and survey services. Enabling technologies acquired in the transaction include Ecosse's modular SCAR Seabed System, capable of completing the entire trenching work scope (route preparation, boulder clearance, trenching and backfill), and its newly developed SCARJet trenching system.

Larson Electronics, a manufacturer and supplier of industrial grade lighting solutions, said it has released a new series of portable battery packs powered with lithium-ion batteries that offer multiple charging capabilities. These battery packs are powered by lithium ion batteries with a Samsung ICR18650-3.7V-2600mAh cell. These units are designed for off-grid use in remote locations with solar panel compatibility (Escape 30, Boulder 15, Nomad 27, and Nomad 13). Industrial lighting company Larson Electronics has released a 70 watt explosion proof LED light fixture mounted on an adjustable beam clamp to simplify mounting on existing beams. The new EPL-LP-70W-LED-HDBC-20-EPP beam clamp mounted LED fixture is weatherproof and comes with an adjustable aluminum mount that makes it suitable for industrial applications, maintenance, cleaning and servicing duties, as well as large hazardous work areas. This unit contains a 70 watt LED lamp that produces 6,000 lumens of light capable of illuminating an area of 5,000 square feet.

Industrial grade lighting equipment specialist Larson Electronics has released a mini tower fastened to a powder coated wheeled base, offering full portability for the mounted equipment. The WAL-XML-12-4.5-WC portable mini tower from Larson Electronics is suited for operators needing a portable, easy to operate system for elevating lights, cameras and other electrical equipment to heights of 12 feet. Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri has selected Climeon’s heat power system Climeon Ocean for its energy efficient solutions, purchasing six Climeon Ocean 450M systems to be installed in its upcoming new cruise ship builds. Total capacity on all ships is up to 2.7 MW. With the latest order, Fincantieri has become the first shipyard contracted to install Climeon Ocean on new cruise ships. Larson Electronics released a new multi-colored hazardous location LED signal light with a 110dBA audible horn. The HAL-TL-5X10W-C-PA from Larson Electronics is a Class 1 Division 2 hazardous location LED signal stack light equipped with an audible horn and approved for use in hazardous environments where explosive and flammable gases, vapors, and dusts may occasionally be present. This hazardous location stack light is designed for routing traffic in industrial refueling stations and processing status indications in manufacturing facilities. The signal light is equipped with five 10 watt LED lamps, producing an amber, red, blue, green, and white light output.

Industrial lighting specialist Larson Electronics announced the release of a 30 watt LED deck light equipped with a 360° spindle that allows for complete rotation while being permanently mounted. The DL-APB-LED-30W permanent mount LED deck light from Larson Electronics provides operators with a high powered lighting solution in applications where a low voltage light is preferred. The 30 watt PAR46 LED light emitter in this unit is highly resistant to damage from shocks and vibration as well as up to 80 percent more efficient than incandescent lights.

On December 11, General Dynamics NASSCO completed bunkering of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the Perla Del Caribe, the world’s second containership to be powered by LNG. Bunkering services were provided by the California-based company Clean Energy as well as Baker Hughes and Envent during a 48-hour period at the NASSCO shipyard in San Diego. Representatives from NASSCO worked collaboratively with several regulatory agencies to prepare for the event, including the U.S. Coast Guard, the American Bureau of Shipping, the San Diego Fire Department, and the Air Pollution Control District.

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi visited Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), seeking increased partnership between the India’s shipbuilding industry and HHI. HHI is reportedly the only Korean company the prime minister visits during his two-day stay in the country. In a meeting at the HHI headquarters in Ulsan, Modi and HHI management discussed ways to expand cooperation on naval defense, LNG carrier construction and shipbuilding technology. The prime minister displayed particular interest in HHI’s range of naval vessels as well as high value vessels such as LNG carriers.

General Dynamics NASSCO informs it has hosted a keel laying ceremony for the first Jones Act ECO tanker currently under construction for SEA-Vista LLC, at the company's shipyard in San Diego. Eric Fabrikant, chief operating officer of SEACOR Holdings Inc., served as the ceremony’s honoree and authenticated the keel by welding his initials onto a steel plate during the ceremony. The steel plate with his initials will be permanently affixed to the ship's keel and will remain with the vessel throughout its time in service. The ECO tanker is the first of a three-tanker contract between General Dynamics NASSCO and SEA-Vista, which calls for the design and construction of three 50,000 deadweight ton LNG-conversion-ready product carriers with a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity.

General Dynamics NASSCO signaled the start of construction of a third "ECO" tanker to be built for American Petroleum Tankers at a steel cutting ceremony at NASSCO's San Diego-based shipyard. As part of a five-tanker contract, the new ECO tankers solidify a mutual commitment between General Dynamics NASSCO and American Petroleum Tankers to design, build and operate innovative and increased energy efficient and fuel-saving products. Each of the five 50,000 deadweight ton product carriers to be constructed by NASSCO will be LNG-conversion ready and will carry 330,000 barrels of cargo. With a specialized ECO design, the tankers are more energy efficient and incorporate environmental protection features, including a Ballast Water Treatment System. "This is an exciting time in the U.S.
