The world is closely watching several contentious flash points that have potential to ignite. The behavior and rhetoric of China and Russia regarding vital shipping lanes in international waters have been alarming. Disputed sovereignty claims and efforts to enforce them have the maritime world on edge. China’s nine-dash line claims about owning the entire East and South China Sea have created a dilemma for themselves and the other nations in the region. The Philippines v. China case with the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague commenced on Jan.

Commander, Task Force (CTF) 70; Commander, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15; and Republic of Korea navy (ROKN) Maritime Task Flotilla (MTF) 7 held a Composite Warfare Committee (CWC) to improve combined warfighting skills and strengthen the U.S. and ROKN alliance, Feb. 17-20. Air defense, ballistic missile defense, antisubmarine warfare (ASW), surface warfare, tactical data links, and communications were discussed during the summit exploring the integration of ROKN's Maritime Task Squadron (MTS) 71 and MTS 72 ships with the U.S. Navy's only forward-deployed strike group.

The U.S. Navy's forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) hosted Hong Kong government officials and media for a daylight embark, Nov. The 20 representatives visited the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier to gain a general orientation of the ship's mission in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations. Glen Paine, President, Maritime Industries Academy Foundation (MIAF) announced that the Steamship Trade Association of  Baltimore Charitable Legacy, Inc. donated $10,000 to the MIAF non-profit charity, which was setup to support Baltimore’s only maritime high school. This maritime charity was founded by Mr. Mark Montgomery, CEO, Ports America Chesapeake, and Mr. Michael Angelos, President, Steamship Trade Association of Baltimore. In a correspondence to Legacy Inc., Glen Paine said, “Since its inception in 2009, the Maritime Industries Academy Advisory Board and Foundation have assisted in the relocation of the MIA and the implementation of a maritime curriculum for ninth grade. It has also helped establish a Junior Naval Officer Training Corps and Honor Guard.

The U.S. Navy will commission Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyer, McCampbell on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, during a ceremony in San Francisco at Pier 30. The ship honors the late Navy Capt. David McCampbell (1910-1996). serving as commander, Air Group 15, the USS Essex, during the Battle of the Philippine Sea (June 19, 1944) and the Battle of Leyte Gulf (October 24, 1944). down seven. In the Battle of Leyte Gulf, he daringly attacked a formation of at least 60 Japanese land-based aircraft. McCampbell shot down at least nine of these aircraft, forcing the remainder to abandon the attack.
