Corps of Engineers Releases Waterways Fact Sheet

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Navigation Data Center (NDC) recently released the latest edition of “The U.S. Waterway System-Transportation Facts.” The fact sheet presents data from the year 2000 on the inland, Great Lakes, and coastal waterways in a fold-out card format. Total domestic waterborne traffic was 1,069.8 million short tons, an increase of 0.8 percent over 1999. Internal waterborne traffic was 628.4 million short tons, a 0.6 percent increase. Coastwise waterborne traffic was 226.9 million short tons, 0.8 percent decrease. The average lengths of inland and coastal hauls for domestic traffic were 481.4 and 1,250.9 miles, respectively.
